The following review article show an introduction to the new generation of γ-γ’ cobalt-based superalloys and the current state of the art in this field. The research concerning discussed materials started in 2006 and are a response for limitations of the commercially used Ni-based superalloys, which are a barrier for further development of the aircraft engines. Nowadays, the γ′-strengthened Ni-based superalloys are unrivaled in view of the aircraft applications, whereas these alloys may be soon replaced by the Co-based analogues due to potentially beneficial high temperature properties of new cobalt alloys. However, this replacement requires a development of the new type of superalloys. This article contains achievements concerning the new group of Co-based superalloys in aspect of their preparation, microstructure, heat treatment and oxidation resistance. Furthermore, the paper shows the development directions for the next years and the contribution of a research team from the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology to the development of new γ-γ cobalt-based superalloys.
