Usługi hotelarskie to ważny sektor gospodarki Tasmanii, a 3- i 4-gwiazdkowe motele zapewniają większość dostępnych tam łóżek. Ich opłacalność jest jednak niewielka. Satysfakcja gości jest również na rekordowo niskim poziomie, co może mieć dalekosiężne skutki wizerunkowe. Ponadto motele nie zapewniają wymaganego prawem poziomu bezpieczeństwa i funkcjonalności. Bezpośrednim powodem jest wysoki koszt doprowadzenia obiektu do standardu wymaganego prawem. Analizie poddano ponad sto 3- i 4-gwiazdkowych moteli. Objęła ona plan, konstrukcję, materiały i wyposażenie. Rezultaty wskazują, że duży odsetek moteli wymaga dodatkowych prac w zakresie ochrony akustycznej, ppoż. i dróg ewakuacyjnych. 30 – 70% środków należałoby przeznaczyć tylko na doprowadzenie do stanu zgodności z obecnymi wymaganiami prawa, zamiast na zwiększenie satysfakcji gości.

Hotel accommodation is an important industry in Tasmania and the 3 and 4 star sector constitutes its majority. Nevertheless, their profitability is weak. Also, visitor satisfaction is at record low levels, which can lead to entire regions losing favour as destinations. More importantly, motels are not meeting expectations in terms of safety and amenity as expressed by the contemporary Building Code of Australia. The reason is the cost of updating a building when its compliance with the current legislation was required. Over one hundred 3-4 star motels were assessed using a number of data sources. Including their assessed for layouts, construction type, materials and equipment. The results show that large percentage of motels would require additional acoustic, fire detection and egress works. Up to 30-70% of a typical renovation budget for property could go to meet the current requirements rather han improving visitor satisfaction levels.
