Małe reaktory modułowe (SMR) są często przedstawiane jako przyszłość branży jądrowej, rozwiązanie, które radykalnie skróci czas budowy elektrowni jądrowych, jednocześnie obniżając ich koszty. Niestety w rzeczywistości, z dziesiątek istniejących na papierze projektów, realizowane są na świecie w tej chwili dwa i oba mają znaczne opóźnienia, a ich koszty znacząco rosną względem początkowych zapowiedzi. Oznacza to, że technologia ta nie będzie komercyjnie dostępna jeszcze przez dekady, a w związku z tym nawoływanie do uwzględnienia tego rozwiązania w Programie Polskiej Energetyki Jądrowej oznacza w istocie odsunięcie jego realizacji na nieokreśloną przyszłość.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) are often portrayed as the silver bullet for the nuclear industry, a solution that will vastly reduce the construction time of nuclear power plants while lowering their costs. In reality, out of dozens of projects that exist on paper, only two are currently being implemented in the world, both of which are significantly delayed, and their costs soar compared to the initial announcements. These unfortunate circumstances mean that SMR technology will not be commercially available for decades, and therefore calling for this solution to be included in the Polish Nuclear Power Programme means that its implementation will be postponed for an indefinite future.
