The railway line mentioned in the title (The Coal Trunk Railroad), built in the years 1928-1933, was the biggest railway investment in the pre-war Poland. For financial and functional reasons, it was projected and constructed as the shortest connection between the seaport of Gdynia and the hinterland coal-mining centre of Upper Silesia, ignoring the existing settlement structure of the country. The article discusses the question of the influence of this railroad on the local and national economical space and transportation system, as well as the differences between the present functions of its northern and southern part. The history of the railroad and natural conditions determining its localisation were also presented.
