Wkład Czesława Ryll-Nardzewskiego w rozwój teorii ergodycznej

W tym przeglądzie postaram się przedstawić, w jaki sposób Czesław Ryll-Nardzewski przyczynił się bezpośrednio lub pośrednio do rozwoju teorii ergodycznej. Za bezpośredni wkład uznałem twierdzenia i prace dotyczące wprost zagadnień z teorii ergodycznej, natomiast za wkład pośredni - zastosowania do teorii ergodycznej (przez innych autorów) jego twierdzeń o charakterze bardziej ogólnym. Wspomnę też wyniki, które co prawda nie korzystają z twierdzeń Ryll-Nardzewskiego, ale zostały po części zainspirowane jego pytaniem, a w efekcie doprowadziły do uzyskania rezultatów wręcz przełomowych w teorii ergodycznej i nie tylko. Nie jest przy tym jasne, na ile pytanie Ryll-Nardzewskiego było rzeczywistym bodźcem do podjęcia tych badań, gdyż mogły one rozwinąć się całkiem niezależnie. Niemniej jednak związek niewątpliwie istnieje i warto go omówić.
