Slurry walls are in fact walls that are placed into the soil through a technique known as slurry wall construction. In short, these walls are constructed by excavating soil, producing a backfill mix and than placing that backfill into the excavated area. The outstanding feature of this technique is that the excavation trench is not empty during the excavation or construction. It is in fact completely filled with a gel type liquid which is providing lateral reinforcement to the trench walls. Typically this slurry consists of a simple mix of well hydrated bentonite, which is nothing more than montmorillonite and water. A well prepared mix forms a colloidal solution that will be the main source of lateral stability. This stabilizing mud will even detain the entry of outside water from a high water table.
