Rural areas are under the pressure of pollutants arising from inner sources: municipal sewage effluents, agri-and food industry, animal breeding, outflows from arable lands as well as from outer sources such as rainfalls and dry deposition. The reduction of the pollution to the lower level than the pollution from outer sources takes place in the soil and plant environment of semi-natural areas. A significant outflow of pollutants from intensively used areas may be particularly dangerous to water environments. There is a necessity of biogeochemical barriers creating towards holding up of those substances by biological, chemical, physical and chemical as well as mechanical processes. The function as the barrier is contentedly fulfilled by forest and meadow ecosystems. The best results are obtained in complex ecotones of crosswise and longitudinal mosaic. Biogeochemical barriers may be formed by plant zones around small water reservoirs. Water in reclamation systems should be put into a band-ditch, where the pollutants may infiltrate throughout the soil and root zone. Water, sediment, plants and soil create then a complex filter purifying outflowing water.
