In this paper we have demonstrated that some orthogonal transforms can be used to achieve data compression. The paper contains short description of selected 2D linear transforms. The sinusoidal (DCT, DST) and rectangular (Walsh, Haar) transforms were considered. The comparison has been done with respect to the method of compression. The proposed lossless algorithm eliminates redundant information, so that one can recover the image exactly upon decompression of the file. This work investigates the use of some features, computed using the orthogonal transform. In this paper we usage the retrieving images from a thematic database, where the semantic contents of images is limited to a specific domain.
