Areas that are exposed to weathering are highly interesting and important fields for applications of metallic effect pigments for powder coatings. Of course, an ideal chemical and weather resistance of pigment incorporated powder coatings are of first priority. Various technologies for the surface protection of pigments are used in order to adequately meet these high requirements. At the same time, great importance is attached to impressive optical characteristics, like for example metallic gloss, colour purity and hiding powder. For aluminium pigments there are pigments on the market that meet these requirements in combination with an optimal powder coating formulation well. To realize the much-asked-forgold, copper or champagne colour tones in high performance applications, mica pigments (pearlescent pigments) have been used, so far. Mica pigments allow gold shades for powder coatings together with the necessary functional properties. However, the disadvantages of mica in this application field are their lower metallic effect and the poor hiding power, which strongly restrict the desired colour spectrum. ECKART has now developed aspecial pigment coating process that provides a solution to this problem. With this advanced technology, functional and attractive pigments for powder coatings in gold, champagne and copper shades are for the first time available. In addition to their elegant appearance, they convince with ideal characteristics regarding corrosion and chemical resistance as well as a strong hiding power.
