El Raval – part of Ciutat Vella is a successful revitalization example, where cultural development has been introduced into degraded and neglected neighborhood. Cultural institutions: MACBA, CCCB and Maritime Museum have released its tourism potential. New public spaces La Rambla del Raval and Angel's Square are socially vital and consequently initiate social relations. As a result, Barcelona "regained" its historical but previously degraded city center - Ciutat Vella. The main objective is to identify: “What has made the El Raval revitalization program so successful?”. On-site researches in Barcelona's El Raval district provided the primary source of knowledge.

Dzielnica El Raval w Ciutat Vella stanowi przykład skutecznej rewitalizacji poprzez wprowadzenie funkcji kultury w zdegradowany obszar. Nowe przestrzenie publiczne przykładowo La Rambla del Raval i Plac Aniołów koncentrują życie społeczne i sprzyjają budowaniu relacji międzyludzkich. Instytucje kultury MACBA, CCCB i Muzeum Maritime stanowią atrakcje turystyczne o znaczeniu międzynarodowym. W efekcie Barcelona "odzyskała" historyczne i uprzednio zdegradowane centrum miasta - Ciutat Vella. Głównym celem badań jest określenie, co zadecydowało o sukcesie programu rewitalizacji w El Raval. Badania na miejscu w dzielnicy El Raval w Barcelonie stanowiły element wyjściowy do dalszych rozważań.
