The facilitation of product and system modularity to improve their efficiency and effectiveness presents a continuous challenge for broad-spectrum research and development projects. Product respectively system modularity is an important concept playing a significant role in modern design and manufacturing strategies, offering several benefits such as flexibility, cost efficiency, development time reduction, scalability, reusability, and customizability. The novelty of this review article lies in its comprehensive synthesis of a representative literature including books, research articles, review papers, etc., and provides a comprehensive overview of product and system modularity concepts with their nuances. The methodology follows a systematic literature review approach, including selection criteria for relevant studies and comparative analysis of modularity frameworks. The paper also focuses on comparison of relative product modularity and optimal product modularity that present two distinct but complementary views on this system property. Additionally, the paper discusses emerging trends and future directions in modularity, particularly in the context of advanced manufacturing technologies and the increasing demand for personalized products.
