NATO sets a high priority on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Nevertheless, there are a number of unsolved issues and areas not being subject of appropriate interest. At the same time there is a high pressure stemming from allied and coalition led crisis response operations to use UAVs. The largest problems with fast implementation of UAVs pertain mainly the integration of such type of equipment in the air management system, C2 systems, and interoperability between them. As part of EUROCONTROL activities a number of works has been initiated aimed at the solving of issues linked to air management, in which UAVs are to participate. Another issue is to secure and protect data obtained through UAV sensors from access of unauthorised receivers. Among UAVs there are also unmanned combat platforms some of which are already in operational use. They can be, and are already, used in close air support missions. The execution of such tasks by manned aircraft is complicated i.a. due to the security of own troops, but also the aircrews of the manned platforms. A further issue - which also appears when viewing the use of UAVs - is also the provision of their protection from enemy activity, such as manned fighter aircraft. Also the availability of frequency bands and the means of organising the data processing and distribution is also a significant challenge. The efforts undertaken by the Alliance as well as other international organisations will probably lead to the establishment of standards and procedures linked to the use of UAVs. However, this will not solve national problems which appear when implementing such type of systems in the military and outside of it. In order to make this process more efficient a scientific effort should be made to find solutions for particular problems based on national solutions which are based on existing and currently developed international solutions.
