Analysis of combustion of wood pellets as a substitute fuel in a low-power boiler

The paper presents selected results of measurements carried out during combustion of wood pellets in a low-power boiler, equipped with a screw feeder and a retort burner. The tested boiler is a multi-fuel boiler with mechanized fuel feed, intended for combustion of small-size coal, sold under the trade name of "ekogroszek". Since initiation of the flame, the boiler operation is fully automatic. The fuel supply system and operation of the forced draught fan are controlled by the boiler controller. Wood pellets can also be used to fire this particular boiler, but it is a substitute fuel, and thus there are no documented test results for its combustion. Manufacturers of multi-fuel boilers on the other hand show great interest in obtaining such results. This is reflected in the delivery of a multi-fuel boiler to the Institute of Thermal Power Engineering of the Cracow University of Technology for the purpose of carrying out appropriate research and tests. The article also presents a test stand, equipped with the boiler supplied for testing, a measurement data acquisition system and a heat discharge system. Analysis of the obtained research results has been performed, and the paper presents also the conclusions from the observation of the boiler during combustion of the substitute fuel in the form of wood pellets.
