The article deals with selected threats to civilian aviation with posed by the possibility of terrorist attacks with Man Portable Anti-Aircraft Rocket Systems. The author forecasts the possibility to intensify this kind of threat paying attention to several crucial factors resulting from using this kind of weapon, lack of appropriate law regulations tightening control on international Man Portable Anti-Aircraft Rocket Systems export market. The current state of this weapon possession by terrorist organizations in the world is evaluated and main sources of Man Portable Anti-Aircraft Rocket Systems’ acquisition by terrorists were shown. Presented in the article incidents connected with attacks on civilian airplanes during the last thirty years prove high fatality of this kind of incidents the main victims of which are passengers and crews, whereas statistical chances of surviving an airplane crash is minimal in most cases. Quite common availability of Man Portable Anti-Aircraft Rocket Systems and their wide range on the black market favours the possibility of spreading terrorist incidents in all regions of the world. This also creates rational factors/worries that Man Portable Anti-Aircraft Rocket Systems may become terrorists’ favourite weapon which will spread fear and threat in every civilian airline passenger.
