Wietnam jest jednym z krajów Półwyspu Indochińskiego w Azji Południowo-Wschodniej, powierzchnia kraju wynosi ok. 331 212 km2, a liczba ludności ok. 90 mln. Na północy graniczy z Chinami, na zachodzie z Laosem i Kambodżą, od wschodu i południa jest otoczony Morzem Południowochińskim (linia brzegowa o długości 3444 km). Stolicą jest Hanoi, leżące w północnej części kraju. Jednak centrum gospodarczym jest Ho Chi Minh (dawniej Sajgon), położony na południu.
