Artykuł opisuje obecną sytuację w światowym górnictwie węgla i metali, a także podejmuje próby ustalenia kierunków rozwoju w najbliższej przyszłości. Ponieważ przemysł wydobywczy jest ściśle związany z sytuacją gospodarczą, autor omawia trendy ekonomiczne dla węgla, miedzi i złota jako reprezentatywnych przedstawicieli surowców kopalnych. Następnie dyskutowane są megatrendy w górnictwie światowym, a więc przenoszenie wydobycia do krajów rozwijających się, zmiany w ilości konsumpcji poszczególnych materiałów, a także structura firm wydobywczych i poszukiwawczych. Na zakończenie autor opisuje kierunki rozwoju technologii wydobycia i przeróbki, które z kolei dyktują cele i zadania przyszłych badań naukowo-wdrożeniowych, a także sposoby kształcenia kadry inżynierskiej.

The article describes current situation in world coal and metal mining and in addition, it makes an attempt to forecast the trends for the near future. Even though the long term demand for coal and metals remain strong, the world mining is still facing many problems, such as inflation, falling commodity prices, supply-demand imbalances and shortage of qualified labor. The author discusses those challenges on the example of few strategic products, namely coal, copper and gold. The megatrends in world mining are then presented: moving mining activities to undeveloped countries and remote regions, changes in demand structure as well as new organizational and financial requirements for mining companies. The technological advances in recent years resulted in productivity increases and gave the industry the ability to mine and process lower grade ores through more efficient mineral processing and use of larger equipment. Those advances, however, are implemented very slowly due to relatively small level of expenditures to research and development dedicated by mining industry. In conclusion, author gives an outlook for future prices and mining costs and formulates the industry demands for research and training activities. Especially important will be developing new study programs for mining engineers and professionals, which will include not only pure technical knowledge but also social, cultural and language skills.
