The continuity, thus conducting operations independently of field, atmospheric conditions and time, is the principal condition of the operations effectiveness. It is not possible without exact data on the position of the enemy's forces and especially the targets to destroy, as well as the data on the position of the own forces and assets. In the 21st century these tasks are accomplished by satellite measurement systems. Nowadays Global Positioning System (GPS) is the most used system. It is a multifunctional system that enables defining the position of stationary and moving objects (on the ground, in the air and at sea) with a centimetre precision. In this article there have been presented: elements and principles of GPS working, methods and techniques of measurement as well as different possibilities to apply this system.
