The article presents the method of utilization of the genetic algorithm for computer-based creation of photofits. The application of artificial intelligence methods has enabled the generation of photofits without the need for the user to select particular elements of a face. The task of a witness who is reproducing a photofit picture is in this case limited to determining the degree of similarity of the images shown to them to the wanted person. The most essential stages of the algorithm are described in the article, that is the determination of the characteristics of the initial population, evaluation function, selection, and the genetic operators – crossing and mutation. Research has been done on an exemplary set of patterns which includes such elements as: oval of a face, hair, eyebrows, eyes, ears, nose and lips. The analysis of the results of the research has enabled the optimization of the settings of the genetic algorithm.
