Teoria wojny Clausewitza znacznie wykracza poza granice „strategii”. Spośród wielu ważnych tematów to, że ten pruski generał zmarł niespodziewanie przed ukończeniem swego największego dzieła O wojnie, nie wydaje się znaczące. Zamieszanie związane z wieloma kwestiami można bezpiecznie zrzucić na nieuwagę czytelników. W obszarze analizy strategicznej okazało się jednak, że zachowanie ewolucyjnego toku myślenia Clausewitza jest bardziej problematyczne. Przykładowo, Clausewitz zostawił nam kilka różnych sposobów kategoryzacji wojny, do wielu z nich zdezorientowani lub kreatywni czytelnicy dodali swoje wariacje. W artykule próbuję przeanalizować kilka kategorii wojen, które Clausewitz opracował do różnych celów, i rozważyć, dlaczego i w jaki sposób jego terminologia zmieniała się z biegiem czasu.

The body of theory Clausewitz developed extended well beyond the confines of ‘strategy.’ For many important subjects the fact that he died unexpectedly before finishing On War does not seem to pose much of a problem. The confusion concerning many issues can safely be blamed on the inattention of his readers. In the area of strategic analysis, however, the preservation of Clausewitz’s evolutionary trail in the book has proven to be more problematic. For instance Clausewitz left us with several different ways of categorizing war, to which confused or creative readers have added more. In this article, I therefore propose to examine a number of categories of war that Clausewitz developed for various purposes and to consider how and why his terminology changed over time.
