Ekologiczni ekonomiści są zdania, że kapitał kulturowy jest ważnym elementem w tworzeniu dobrobytu. Zdaniem autorki artykułu, zgodnie z założeniami rozwoju zrównoważonego, należy podjąć działania sprzyjające maksymalizacji produktywności kapitału naturalnego. Rozwijać należy takie technologie, które umożliwią powiększenie przede wszystkim produktywności kapitału naturalnego, mniej produktywność ludzkiej pracy. W tym procesie rola kapitału kulturowego będzie miała kluczowe znaczenie, nie bez znaczenia będzie również sposób zarządzania, który jest w dużej części uwarunkowany kulturowo.

This paper examines the concept of cultural capital and assesses its influence on the use of natural capital. Cultural capital has been described as the underlying factor providing various societies with the means to adapt and maintain themselves in their environments. Sustainable development calls for a shift in the way in which natural capital is managed and used. Much effort has been made in discussing and analyzing the sustainable development process and mechanisms by which natural capital levels can be maintained. Cultural capital is an important element in this process. There have been attempts to analyze the role of culture in development. These attempts were limited to four areas: (a) discussions on the potential of rural economies to capitalize on cultural endowment, (b) studies which have revealed the importance of cultural factors as the underlying causes of different economic performance between regions, (c) attempts to develop economic models which take into account culture, and (d) attempts to develop proxy indicators and quantify levels of cultural capital. Although limited, they gave testimony to the significance of cultural capital in sustainable development.
