The article deals with basic problems of Russian Federation’s security strategy viewed from the global security perspective. After a short introduction into the genesis and development of global security problems, there is analysed the way that Russia experienced in the 90s facing an imperial heritage of the USSR – one of the main global superpowers of the 20th century. There has been presented the evolution of Russian security strategy and policy leading from the confrontation attitude towards the West to a strategic co-operation, even partnership. The key factors shaping Russian security include inner threats (the problem of Chechnya), Islamic threats in the south, NATO expansion in the west, growing power of China in the east, international terrorism eruption, economic and demographic crisis, the collapse of Russia’s own military potential. The basic assumptions of the state security included in the most important strategic documents, i.e. in the national security concept, foreign policy concept, military doctrine and information security doctrine are presented in detail.
