Antipersonnel mines in light of international law

Since the end of World War 2 antipersonnel mines have become a real plague for the citizens of many countries in the world. This problems concerns 55% of all the countries, in particular those ones which experienced armed conflicts. Since the 80s international humanitarian organisations have been conducting campaign in order to eliminate entirely the use of antipersonnel mines. Many celebrities from the world of politics, culture and arts have been engaged in actions for the ban of antipersonnel mines. These activities were noticed on the international arena and crowned by awarding the Nobel Prize in 1997 to the International Campaign on Antipersonnel Mines Ban. Since 1980 two documents have been issued concerning this matter, one of them has been updated. International regulations concerning antipersonnel mines have been described in the article. The consequences for countries and their armed forces that result from ratifying the convention on mine applications have been presented. The principles of these regulations implementation have been discussed. Also the obligations of countries and principles of international co-operation to eliminate mines from the whole world arsenals have been defined.
