Denise Scott Brown, jedna z czołowych postaci urbanistyki postmodernizmu, odegrała pionierską rolę w tworzeniu nowych metod analizy krajobrazu architektonicznego, opowiadając się za włączeniem do głównego nurtu badań postmodernistycznego doświadczenia miasta i środowiska mieszkaniowego. Artykuł przedstawia koncepcje Denise Brown przemawiające za zmianą paradygmatu modernistycznego, formalistycznego i funkcjonalnego rozumienia miasta. Jej dążeniem było przekształcenie myślenia o socjologii miasta przy zastosowaniu postmodernistycznych metod analizy urbanistycznej. Metody– za jej czasów kontrowersyjne – zdążyły wejść do kanonu analiz urbanistycznych współczesnego miasta. W scenach życia codziennego dokumentowała interakcje społeczne, rozważała nad złożonością ponowoczesnego doświadczenia biedy i bogactwa, krytyką postępującej komercjalizacji wizerunku miasta czy ubogości formalnie zaplanowanego krajobrazu miejskiego oraz wernakularnej architektury amerykańskiego miasta XX wieku. W jej repertuarze znajdowała się fotografia, kolaż, leporello, aktywna socjoplastyka, dzięki którym skupiała uwagę planistów na symbolikę popularną, konsumpcyjną, przedstawiającą żywe miasto. Jej metodologia skupiała się na odkodowywaniu urbanistyki w ujęciu empirycznym, realnym i doświadczalnym. Była prekursorką socjologicznie uwarunkowanych studiów nad społeczeństwem postmodernistycznym i jego ucieleśnieniem w formie podmiejskich willi, które bada w swoim Learning from Levittown. Zastosowała nową metodologię krytyczną, ale włączającą obserwację złożoności i wyzwań współczesnego krajobrazu miejskiego.

Denise Scott Brown a trail blazing architect and advocate for postmodernism played a pivotal role in reshaping the architectural landscape by championing the inclusion of postmodern urban and housing experience. The paper focuses on the transition from modernist formalist and functional understanding of the city, towards postmodern urban methods as represented by DSB, photography, collage, active socioplastics, attention to consumerist symbolism, as a means of encoding the empirics of urbanism, the living cities. In everyday scenes she documented social interactions, meditated on complexities of postmodern experience of poverty and wealth, criticism of increasing commercialization of the image of the city, and muteness of formally planned urban scape, and architectural vernacular of twentieth century American city. She was a precursor in her socially informed studies of postmodern society and its embodiment in suburban housing, such as in “Learning form Levittown”. She applied the new methodology and critical yet inclusive observation of complexities and challenges of contemporary cityscape.
