W artykule opisano genezę oraz przebieg konkursu studenckiego zorganizowanego przez Katedrę Architektury i Urbanistyki dla studentów kierunku architektura. Temat konkursu dotyczył przekształcenia funkcjonalnego oraz estetycznego przestrzeni publicznej dedykowanej studentom i pracownikom uczelni. Wykorzystanie procedury konkursowej w edukacji architektonicznej nie jest pomysłem nowym, jednak ten opisany wyróżnia się realizacją. Projekt, realizowany niezależnie od przedmiotów semestralnych, dotyczył istotnego zagadnienia projektowania przestrzeni publicznej. Konkurs był przyczynkiem do dyskusji na temat potrzeb funkcjonalnych terenu II Kampusu. Uczestnicy konkursu byli jednocześnie potencjalnymi użytkownikami placu, mogli mieć realny wpływ na jego charakter po przebudowie. Udział w konkursie wzbogacił doświadczenie projektowe uczestników, zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o umiejętność pracy w zespole, delegowanie zadań i zarządzanie czasem pracy. Umożliwił im konfrontację z rzeczywistymi problemami przestrzennymi. Stosowanie niestandardowych metod dydaktycznych spotyka się z pozytywnym odzewem ze strony studentów. Warsztatowa forma prowadzenia zajęć oraz skumulowanie ich w kilka dni intensywnej pracy sprzyja twórczej atmosferze, „burzy mózgów”, która daje początek interesującym koncepcjom. Dialog, jaki nawiązuje się w trakcie warsztatów i wspólnej pracy, jest cenny dla obu stron, bardzo często stanowi dla studentów zachętę do własnych badań, poszukiwań oraz rozwoju.

This article describes the genesis and process of a student competition organized by the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning for students majoring in Architecture. The topic of the competition concerned the functional and aesthetic transformation of a public space dedicated to the students and staff of the university. Using the competition procedure in architectural education is not a new idea, but this one stands out in terms of its implementation. The project, implemented independently of semester subjects, dealt with an important issue of designing public space. The competition was a contribution to a discussion on the functional needs of the 2nd Campus. Participants in the competition were also potential users of the square and could have a real impact on its character after reconstruction. Participation in the competition enriched the participants' design experience, especially in terms of teamwork, task delegation and time management. It enabled them to confront real spatial problems. The use of non-standard teaching methods meets with a positive response from students. The workshop form of conducting classes, their cumulation into several days of intensive work encourages creative atmosphere, 'brainstorming', which gives rise to interesting concepts. The dialogue which is established during the workshops and joint work is valuable to both parties, very often providing students with an incentive for their own research and development.
