I. Characteristics and genesis of old towns lay-out. As each town consist a number of tribes, i.e. groups of families descending from the same ancestor, always several irregular main and sub-alleys connecting the various districts and buildings. Most of traditional houses and settlements varied from one place to another, but always were distinguished with wall-to-wall system of construction, non-rectangular streets, courtyard houses and heavy construction (especially coastal old towns, like Tripoli, Benghazi, Misurata and the others. This pattern has lot of advantages, as privacy, safety, quiet, cleanness, close social links, beauty and uniqueness of each town composition. II. Contemporary housing characteristics, structure, and disadvantage. The most common features of the projects is their similarity in most of Libyan cities and towns. Many projects which, designed and constructed in Tripoli and Benghazi are implanted in other places through the country with almost the same design criteria and standards. The ignorance of the local conditions and the traditional solutions as well as the lack of public participation and new human needs have made many of new projects unaccepted by people. Conclusion: The provision of housing should be not only considered from quantity but also from quality needs. New projects should reflect the social conditions as well as the suitable adaptation to the local environment conditions in each area need to be developed. Therefore, the successful lessons we are given by the traditional housing solutions as well as the present public views, comments and observations should be used as a main guidelines for suggesting the needed housing design solutions.
