This paper was presented at the Polish Research Conference in Łódź organised by the Łódź University Research for Peace Centre and PAN Research for Peace Committee in October 1997. The author presents selected personal and structural security conceptions in the philosophical thought history. Beginning with ancient philosophy (the output of pre-Socratic and Socratic schools representatives) through early Christian scholars, St. Augustine in particular, he discusses the viewpoints of Renaissance and Enlightenment scholars, proceeding to philosophical literature of the second half of the 19th century and the 20th century, focusing on contemporary Christian philosophy. Historiosophical, anthropological and ethical conceptions built within Roman Catholic Church social studies contain many precious statements concerning the personal and structural security problem under analysis. Answering the question included in the title of the paper, the author thinks that each of them can find its place and aim in studies on war and peace and personal and structural security. Moreover, only the scholars’ and philosophers’ common effort can bring fruitful results in interesting in a methodological way holistic, complex war and peace analysis and creating a general theory or, maybe, philosophy of security.
