Since its creation, the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance has been undergoing constant process of qualitative and quantitative changes. Twelve states started it in 1949, now it includes 19 members. During the last enlargement three countries were included: Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic (1999). The next enlargement is planned for 2004, when the next seven countries invited to accession negotiations at the NATO summit meeting in Prague in November 2002, will join the Alliance. Fighting against international terrorism, that also threats the countries which are not NATO members, is one of the biggest challenges that NATO members face at the beginning of the 21st century.
