Complaints of feeling cold and/or shivering are common among surgical patients, who may already be in a state of hypothermia before surgery in a cold environment and are also fasting for many hours, resulting in reduced metabolic heat production from digestion. A significant number of patients report that feeling cold was the worst part of their surgical experience, and they usually rank it higher than postoperative pain as a source of discomfort. This article presents the methods used in operating theatres to prevent patient hypothermia and information on their potential conflict with ventilation airflows.
