Niemiecka 10 Dywizja Piechoty V Korpusu Armijnego 5 Armii swoją pierwszą bitwę w czasie I wojny światowej stoczyła na pograniczu belgijsko-francuskim 22-23 sierpnia 1914 roku. Przeciwnikiem w tym wyniszczającym starciu była francuska 7 Dywizja Piechoty IV Korpusu Armijnego 3 Armii, która stawiła opór na linii miejscowości Belmont i Éthe. Dla strony francuskiej obrona tej pozycji miała duże znaczenie, porażka oznaczała bowiem wkroczenie jednostek niemieckiego V Korpusu Armijnego do Francji. W dwudniowej krwawej walce pułki 7 Dywizji Piechoty poniosły duże straty i zostały zmuszone do odwrotu. I choć 10 Dywizja Piechoty odniosła swoje pierwsze zwycięstwo w tej wojnie, sukces okupiła znacznymi stratami. W pułkach 10 Dywizji Piechoty, które stacjonowały na terenie Prowincji Poznańskiej, służyli Polacy. W bitwie pod Éthe wielu z nich zginęło - w niemieckich mundurach przelało krew za obcą sprawę.

The German 10th Infantry Division of the 5th Corps of the 5th Army fought its first WWI battle on the Belgian French border on August 22-23, 1914. Its adversary in that devastating clash was the French 7th Infantry Division of the 4th Corps of the 3rd Army, which put up resistance on the line between the towns of Belmont and Ethe. Defending that position was essential for the French side, since failure meant that the units of the 5th Army Corps would enter France. In a two-day violent fight, the regiments of the 7th Infan try Division suffered significant losses and were forced to retreat; and although the 10th Infantry Division won its first battle of the war, the success was achieved at the cost of many lives. Regiments of the 10th Infantry Division that were stationed on the territory of the Province of Posen included Polish troops. Many of them died in the battle of Ethe-they shed blood in German uniforms, fighting for someone else's cause.
