Research on laser beam propagation in the air with randomly time-varying density area is presented in this paper. The semiconductor laser with elliptical crosssection of beam was used in the examination and Gaussian distributions described the intensity of the laser light along major or minor axes of the ellipse. The randomly time-varying density field was produced over horizontally placed cylindrical heater. The measurements were performed at some given temperatures of the heater. Analysis of the obtained readings shows that presented method of measurement is very sensitive to any density fluctuation of air and characterizes very low level of inertia. Therefore such optical method can be useful for examination of slight and short-lived density fluctuation in air which cannot be perceived by mechanical sensors. The fact that the light does not disturb the subtle spatial structure of air density has many advantages.
