Extractive and processing waste accumulated on the landfills and heaps are potentially raw materials. The waste can be used in various areas of economy. Re-using of this waste should be regarded as an important element in the development of the circular economy model. The idea of circular economy is a maximum use of manufactured products until their useful function is completely exhausted. Cost effectiveness is a basic criterion for the imple-mentation of this action plan. The total cost of rehabilitation of waste facilities is included into the components which will be taken into consideration before making a decision of using waste from facilities. This paper presents the conclusions from cost effectiveness of re-usable waste accumulated on three selected reclaimed sites.

The article describes the Geoenvironmental Map of Poland that has been developing at the PGI- NRI since 1997. In 2019, work on its last, third edition was completed. Over the years, the scope of data developed in the project has been expanded. The form of map map sharing and the way of data presentation have also been modernized. For example, the last map edition was made in GIS technology, with the vector topographic database VMap Level 2 used as a topographic background. The map consisted of 21 layers, grouped in eight thematic layers presented graphically on two boards (board A and board B). One continuous database was created for all information layers as an integral part of the project. The map data are shared through web services and reporting tools that allow direct and easy access to their resource. The information and data collected and developed within the map have many uses and are used by a wide range of entities, e.g. state and local government authorities, investors, companies and universities (examples are described in the paper). Therefore, now the project will be continued in a changed, modern form. Its key elements will be: database maintenance, constant data update and map generation for current orders.

Environmental geology deals with many issues closely relatedto the life of human beings. The most important directions of environmentalgeology developed in Poland include: geochemical mapping, environmental protection and waste management programs, and reclamation projects.Cartographic research was conducted using an appropriate scale of work, which enabled the determination of the geochemical background andanomalies throughout the whole country, in selected urban-industrialregions and in specific locations. Valuable information for the environment was also collected as a digital database in the form of a map at 1:50,000scale. Environmental protection programs are among the tools used to implement environmental protection policy at the level of administration of the commune, poviat and voivodship. When developing a document, the assessment of the state of the components of the environment is of key importance, as it is used to plan environmental strategies. Scientific and environmental data are used for evaluation. They must be analyzed and interpreted by experts. In addition to environmental protection programs, the Polish Geological Institutealso develops other documents on environmental issues. As part of the reclamation, liquidation of place of storage of hazardous plantprotection products was carried out all over the country and soils and landfills were cleaned.

Environmental protection programs are presented in the legal order of the Polish law as strategic documents for the effective implementation of environmental policy (previously ecological policy) by commune, provincial and regional administration levels. These documents provide some information about areas of the local governmental administration in an integrated manner. In addition, they permit the local authorities to manage individual components of the territorial areas in the systematized way which is focused on social, economic and legal business in accordance with the rule of sustainable development. Environmental protection programs are created under the regulations in force. They also take into account the guidelines included in the strategic documents. The most crucial part of the programs is the analysis and evaluation of current environmental components of commune areas. The factors such as demography, economics and infrastructure are also taken into consideration in these documents. Based on the diagnosis of the current state of the environment, the environmental protection strategy is established, i.e.:the main targets and the activity guide lines which are needed to achieve the tasks framed in these documents. This method has also a positive impact on the implementation of environmental programs by the commune authority, being directly translated into the effects obtained. This article discusses the legal order of creating the environmental programs, their scope and meaning for the environmental policy carried out in Poland. This also indicates the achievements of the Polish Geological Institute in the field of formulating the environmental protection programs as well as the examples of using the documents in other branches, including research activities.
