This paper aims to deepen and differentiate superficial and all too 'smooth' depictions of economic globalization by probing more deeply into social dynamics of conflict and resistance within Transnational Corporations. Conceiving of these as interaction systems, it is shown that (1) the living practice of organizational life is much more obstinate than is commonly assumed and makes use of diverse strategies to enact formal as well as informal resistance, and (2) that these social dynamics are both fuelled by and strengthen what, following Richard Sennett, can be called the 'power of place'. Thus, strategic globalization emerges as inextricably intertwined with social dynamics of localization.
There is widespread and often emotionally charged discussion these days about the effects that the intensifying globalization is having on national economies. It is worth resting opinions on unprejudiced quantitative analyses rather than unbridled debate. These require the amorphous concept of globalization to be circumscribed and for the advance of 'internationalization' to be measured in the main dimensions of economic globalization. The article examines the main indices of globalization - interpreted as economic openness - with their content, limitations and susceptibility to expression in numerical form. It goes on to provide comparative analysis based on numerical indices for the internationalization of Hungary, EU member-states and selected developing countries over the last three decades. The first part followed a conceptual clarification with a consideration of foreign trade in goods and services. The second, published here, considers portfolio and working capital flows, and the extent of foreign ownership control and migration of the national tax bases.
The concept of globalization is interpreted by various authors in terms of its importance or content. This article presents an overview of the theoretical background and results of an analysis of the influence of globalization trends on important macroeconomic indicators of selected countries. An examination of the level of globalization as a quantitative marker was enabled by the KOF Index of Globalization, which provides an indication of the economic, political and social globalization at global level. Research methods included time series analysis, trend analysis and nonparametric regression model (regression of panel data).
