According to the author films based on Choderlos de Lacos’ novel are different from the book, and very different from one another, apart of course from the superficial similarities in the storyline. This is so, not only due to creative treason, but also because cinema placed this novel in the context of very different cultures, with the action taking place in very different places and historical periods, other than those appearing in the original. Finally there is the question of adapting the novel to the needs of a different medium. Apart from changes that were intentional on the part of the artists, there are also changes that they were forced to introduce, the effect of which was an intricate interweaving of cultures. The author focuses mainly on the modernized film versions of the novel such as those directed by Roger Vadim, Josée Dayan and Roger Kumble, but also the Korean transcription ('Untold Scandal', dir. E J-yong /2003/) and Miloš Forman’s 'Valmont', within which she sees a Czech gaze. According to Helman modernizing de Laclos’ novel is the result of a conviction that love games that contemporary people play are not less sophisticated and perfidious than those of the characters of the novel. The changes necessitated by the realities of today are obviously less interesting than those caused by psychological and cultural differences. Helman concludes that what the filmmakers particularly explore is the exegesis of evil carried out by the author, and his analysis of the reasons for people finding pleasure in it. The evil we are dealing with here, is however of a special kind – namely sexual evil.

Theatre workshops are not only a creative and effective way to learn a foreign language but also a substantial cultural experience. The article reflects experiences gained by stagings during Summer School of Polish Language, Literature and Culture courses in Cieszyn (University of Silesia). The author introduces adaptation techniques used in transcoding literary works for foreign recipients. Adaptations result in the creation of a new (different) quality of works – sometimes even very loosely based on the original.

Emotions appeared very early in phylogenetic and ontogenetic development. The word emotion originates from the Latin verb movere. However, attempts to distinguish and name the concept represented by the phrase emotion reach back to the beginnings of human language. The compound and subjective nature of emotions stress an essential aspect of this phenomenon, which leads to changes in physiological, psychological, and behavioral issues. World literature dedicates significant attention to the mutual associations between the cognitive and adaptive processes and emotions. Emotions help to estimate the adaptational meaning of stimuli. Its cognitive aspect is, however, just as significant. The review of the literature presented herein is an attempt to classify and evaluate particular emotions, both positive and negative, and the influence they have on physical and mental health. Paul Ekman, the author of one of the more esteemed classification attempts, has distinguished six basic emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. These universal emotions are recognized based on emotional facial expressions, the automatic reactions that unfold within microseconds. Robert Plutchik, on the other hand, devised his „emotion wheel” upon which he organized eight basic emotions by grouping them in pairs comprising a combination of positive and negative emotions. He is also the author of one of the best framed emotional combination theories. In this respect, emotions play a crucial role as compound model reactions to everyday situations such as a long-lasting effort ensuring survival and individual development.

The article deals with the forms of the adaption of vernacular buildings situated in the upper part of the Ore Mountains to cold climate. Unfavourable climatic conditions in the mountainous areas were a significantly restricting factor, especially in terms of agriculture and permanent settlement. The Ore Mountains folk house is a result of the century-long adaptation to cold climate, and as such it includes a set of purposeful measures. These could be seen in the layout and construction of the house (a compact house with integrated shed, specific forms of roof) and materials used (boarding or shingle-panelling to protect gables and half-timbered walls, shingle or thatch roofs). Different architectural elements, which were conditioned by the local climate and were typical for the traditional architecture in the Ore Mountains, developed there (wind porch, bay toilet, another entrance on the second floor).

This paper is concerned with the issue of optimum detection of known signal in nonwhite noise and/or narrow-band interferences. The detection is carried out in three steps. First, some function related to the power spectrum of interfering process I(z) is estimated via adaptation. Second, the signal + interference is withened due to I(z). Third, the replica of signal is filtered via I(z) to match it to the deformed signal in the previous step. The simulation of SS reception in presence of NB interference shows a high gain in comparison to classical single-matched detection.

The notion of stress was introduced to science by Hans Selye. In medical nomenclature stress is a homeostasis disorder due to physical or psychological factors. These factors can cause a formation of different functional, morphological and psychological changes. Universally, stress is recognized as a harmful phenomenon. Undesirable conditions bring on strong or chronic stress. Many researchers recognize stress as a basic development factor. The notion of stress today is still inexplicable ad finem.

Because of an aging society and the relevance of computer-based systems in a variety of fields of our life, personalization of software systems is becoming more important by the day in order to prevent usage errors and create a good user experience. However, personalization typically is a time-consuming and costly process if it is done through manual configuration. Automated adaptation to specific users’ needs is, therefore, a useful way to reduce the efforts necessary. The IAAA project focuses on the analysis of user interaction capabilities and the implementation of automated adaptations based on them. However, the success of these endeavors is strongly reliant on a careful selection of interaction modalities as well as profound knowledge of the target group’s general interaction behavior. Therefore, as a first step in the project, an extensive task-based user observation with thorough involvement of the actual target group was conducted in order to determine input devices and modalities that would in a second step become subject of the first prototypic implementations. This paper discusses the general objectives of the IAAA project, describes the methodology and aims behind the user observation and presents its results.

Marbled crayfish are the typical invasive hydrobionts spreaded over the lot of world`s waterbodies and create the populations that can reproduce in the presence of only one triploid female, thereby the threat of biodiversity appears and increase the competition with local species. Due to the appearance of the marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis (Lyko, 2017) in the open Ukrainian waterbodies, there is necessity to research it`s adaptation possibilities to the ecological factors to predict it`s possible spread and naturalization. The research aim was to determine the physiological and biochemical features of the adaptations of marbled crayfish as a new species inhabiting the aquatic ecosystems of Ukraine under the conditions of toxicological load on the aquatic ecosystem. The obtained research results indicate significant changes in individual cytological and biochemical indicators of marbled crayfish under the impact of heavy metal ions. A change in these parameters may indicate a rapid cellular response of the crustacean species to the toxic effect of heavy metals. These indicators can be used in the future in studying the adaptation of marbled crayfish in natural waterbodies.

Do Marjorie Garber’s premises that Shakespeare makes modern culture and that modern culture makes Shakespeare apply to his reception in Asian contexts? Shakespeare’s Asianization, namely adaptation of certain Shakespeare elements into traditional forms of local cultures, seems to testify to his timelessness in timeliness. However, his statuses in modern Asia are much more complicated. The complexity lies not only in such a cross-cultural phenomenon as the Asianizing practice, but in the Shakespearization of Asia-the idealization of him as a modern cultural icon in a universalizing celebration of his authority in many sectors of modern Asian cultures. Yet, the very entities of Asia, Shakespeare, modernity, and tradition must be problematized before we approach such complexities. I ask questions about Shakespeare’s roles in Asian conceptions of modernity and about the relationship between his literary heritage and Asian traditions. To address these questions, I will discuss this timeliness in Asian cultures with a focus on Shakespeare adaptations in Asian forms, which showcase various indigenous approaches to his text-from the elitist legacy maintaining to the popularist re-imagining. Asian practices of doing Shakespeare have involved other issues. For instance, whether or not the colonial legacies and postcolonial re-inventions in the dissemination of his works in Asian cultures confirm or subvert the various myths about both the Bard and modernity in most time of the 20th century; in what ways Shakespeare has been used as at once a negotiating agent and negotiated subject in the processes of the prince’s translations and adaptations into Asian languages, costumes, landscapes, cultures and traditions.

Prostota definicji, jasno sformułowany podmiot, cele i kierunki działania to podstawowe zalety definicji adaptacji.

The article attempt and systematizes nomenclature concerning settle post-mining objects. In this article the most important indication is legitimacy of using adaptation and revitalization concepts relevant to post-mining objects. The concepts widespread in literature were compared. For revitalization, different definitions from architecture, urban, geography of the city and economy, was setting up. Only one definition was take into account for adaptation. Comparison was analyzed in five areas: subject, target, contractors, space and tools. It was found that the definitions of revitalization and adaptation are neither identical nor complementary. Adaptation is characterized by creation of new product based on post-mining object and uses tools adjusted to post-mining objects profile. In case of revitalization it is impossible to carry out this process in case of this post-mining objects because there are no possibilities to reach the same conditions as before exploitation. Summary. Revitalization is correct definition for city renovation where destroyed city space should be rebuilt and disappearing function must be restored. On the other hand, when the subject of consideration is post-exploitation area without buildings where the function must be changed adaptation it is better definition.

This article provides an analysis of translation methods of elements of culture in guidebooks, which belong to the so-called functional texts. There are two basic translation strategies of such lexis: 1) exotisation and 2) adaptation (most frequently combined with exotisation). The high frequency of the first strategy depends on the informative function of a given text. This function results in the lack of occurrence of adaptation, uncombined with exotisation. Moreover, the choice of the particular translation strategy is influenced by the following factors: the dynamic character of the translation norm and the impact of the tradition of interlinguistic relations.

The paper summarizes the research on parameterization of LMS-based adaptive controlalgirithms for active noise control (ANC) systems. these single- and multi-channel systems were built in enclosures to create three-dimensional zones of quiet (3D ZoQs) by controlling electro-acoustic plants characterized dynamics and strong nonstationarities. On the basis of results of simulation as well as real-world experiments it was shown how the electroacoustic plant modeling errors, adaptation parameter and controller filer order choice influence the ANC system performance, also in nonstationary conditions. These observations were used to formulate some parameterization rules and hints for systems controlling electro-acoustic plants. It was shown that properly parameterized ANC systems create large adaptive, spatially moving 3D ZoQs.

The article presents the results of the analysis of the declarations of the authorities of small and medium-sized cities in Poland regarding the need to implement adaptation measures to the effects of climate change, and an assessment of the adequacy of the planned activities in this area. As part of the study, Environmental Protection Programmes in 80 cities with a population of up to 100,000 inhabitants were analysed. In the beginning, the most important challenges that the effects of climate change pose for cities are discussed. Then the results of the research are described and discussed. The paper ends with a short summary. The obtained results are not unambiguous. On the one hand, it has been shown that the issues of environmental protection and adaptation to climate change are not among the most important priorities of the authorities of small and medium-sized cities, and the way of presenting the issue of adaptation in the analysed documents, concerning the threats caused by the effects of climate change, is not sufficient and adequate to the level of danger. On the other hand, the results show that the importance of this problem has been increasing in recent years and that the authorities of small and medium-sized towns more and more often declare the need and readiness to support adaptation measures.

In Julie Taymor’s film version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest (2010), Prospero is changed into a female, Prospera. As almost all the original lines and plots are retained, the film would appear to be a ‘straight’ film version of Shakespeare. However, changing the sex of the main character sheds a new light on the original play and proves the film to be an inspiring adaptation. By examining the relationship between the female characters (Prospera, Miranda) and the non-humans (Caliban, Ariel) in the film, this paper will show how deeply sexuality is related to the power struggle and the final reconciliation.

The article is concerned with the adaptation narratives of Estonians, who arrived in Australia after World War II. The adaptation stories reveal that people who arrived at different times had to adapt to all possible settings, make relevant changes in themselves, their beliefs and physical space. Presumably, adaptation depends on the migration policy of the country, presence of personal support network, personal choices, personality traits and people’s learning capacity. Excerpts from longer chains of narratives have been chosen to characterise arrival and modes of adaptation into the new environment; also, language use and single controversial customs have been highlighted.

The execution variability and outcomes found in throwing actions have received special attention in numerous studies in recent years. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of an unstable condition on velocity, accuracy and kinematics of movement in the seven metres throw in handball. Twenty-five young handball players took part in an experiment, throwing towards a target on a stable and an unstable surface. Each participant performed 32 throws, 16 for each situation. Linear variability of the dominant hand was assessed by 3D Motion Tracking. A radar sports gun was used to record the velocity of the ball and the throws were video recorded to establish their accuracy. Results showed significant decreases in throwing velocity in unstable conditions, but these did not significantly affect the accuracy achieved in performance. Differences were also found in movement kinematics between the two throwing conditions and relationships were found between kinematics, velocity and accuracy.

The article was dedicated to ensuring the adaptability of the enterprise. As a means of providing adaptability of an enterprice's activity there was suggested resources and their reserves: basic production assets of the enterprise, financial resources, material resources, carriers of knowledge, information and intangible resources of the enterprise. I-level barriers related to unawareness of need to involve the accumulation of resources and reserves resources for the providing adaptability of an enterprice's activity at the level of enterprise management. II-level barriers are associated with resource constraints — lack of resources, resources absence, lack of ability to attract resources and accumulate reserves resources for various reasons III-level barriers are associated with psychological resistance from employees. In the article problems hindering to providing adaptability of an enterprice's activity as barriers of I, II and III levels were presented and characterized. Influence of the level of barriers to providing adaptability of an enterprice's activity is characterized. Effect of the provision level of providing adaptability of an enterprice's activity on such characteristics of adaptation as rate of adaptation, the cost of adaptation, the scope and depth of adaptation is proved and the nature of such effects is investigated.
