This paper presents a model, based on Analytic Hierarchy Process, to support a maintenance manager with a suitable tool for focusing on the most relevant choices which need to be prioritized. The paper provides an insight on how structural and infra-structural decision elements, traditionally conceived for assessing the manufacturing strategy of a company, could be adopted as criteria for configuring a maintenance system. A model based on Analytic Hierarchy Process has been developed and tested in two industrial case studies in order to demonstrate how it can guide a maintenance manager in keeping the strategic decisions coherently with the overall company's manufacturing strategy. Main beneficiaries are mainly maintenance managers who have to tackle relevant strategic decisions in managing their maintenance systems. Given the increasing role of maintenance within the operations strategy of a company, the heterogeneity of actors involved, with the relevant risk of assuming conflicting decisions, it is of utmost importance to lever on adequate and shared decision support systems rather than relying on a mere empirical knowledge. The model proposed in this paper, based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process, fills this gap since it provides a structured support in the decision making process by comparing and prioritising the relevant strategic decisions pertaining to the configuration of a maintenance system(original abstract)

In most cases, customers evaluate a product based on the first impression, which is propagated by the product itself. These impressions are often subjectively engraved in the products, difficult to describe thus making them difficult to handle. Technical specifications on the other hand are less considered at first sight. In the case of leisure products such as Motorbikes (motorcycles), subjective factors are considerably intensified. Thus, such products are suitable to describe as "difficult-to-quantify" characteristics. Subjective and difficult to quantify features for products such as motorcycles could be; the design, the dynamics (vitality) as well as the price (value) impression. Thus, amid a DFG research project, a method will have to be developed that allows the scaling of difficult to quantify characteristics in other to support a requirement-orientated product development. For this purpose, four different levels were developed to contain scaling based on usage. To support the scaling development, methods such as the AHP or the Multivariate Analysis Method can be used. In the following analysis it will be shown how perception-defining characteristics for motorcycles can be derived from design analyses. The first step is the design analyses conducted with the help of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) scale based on Thomas L. Saaty. The advantage of this approach is a direct comparison of all alternatives to themselves. If, for example, five motorcycles are compared with regards to design, then a benchmark for good design implicitly arises. These scales build up dynamically depending on the analyzed alternatives. Based on the previous example, the more alternatives are used the more valid the scale. The systematic arrangement of the perception-defining characteristics in product development can be a deciding factor for a better product design and its related product perception. Special gender specific perception differences for motorcycles will be evaluated in this paper. Thus, it is shown that there are specific motorcycle models that appeal to women while other specific models are preferred by men. In this case, perception-defining characteristics can be derived from a detail analysis of a preliminary assessment which can aid the description of female and male preferences for motorcycles. In this paper a method to concatenate the perception-defining characteristics and products will be presented. Above all, these characteristics should be considered in the product planning phase. This approach offers producers the possibility, through identification of important perception-defining characteristics, to differentiate themselves from competitors because important product characteristics are deigned to relate to the various target groups. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is one of the methods used in the analysis of complex decision-making problems where there are more than one decision criterion. Due to the nature of the decompositional approach, AHP enables the fragmentation of the complex decision problem and the creation of final ranking. This means a potential opportunity to use AHP method to measure the consumers' preferences. The main aim of the article is to present the author's AHPmethod package for R program. The paper presents functions of the package and the use of the AHPmethod package in marketing research on the example of the measurement and analysis of consumer preferences.(original abstract)

Pairwise comparisons are an important tool of modern (multiple criteria) decision making. Since human judgments are often inconsistent, many studies have focused on the means of expressing and measuring this inconsistency, and several inconsistency indices have been proposed as an alternative to Saaty's inconsistency index, CI, and consistency ratio, CR, for reciprocal pairwise comparison matrices. The aims of this paper are threefold: firstly, a row inconsistency index (RIC) is proposed and the properties of this index are examined. Secondly, a comparison of selected inconsistency indices for a corner pairwise comparison matrix is provided. Last, but not least, another axiom about the upper bound on the value of an inconsistency index is postulated, and a set of selected inconsistency indices is examined with respect to this axiom. Numerical examples complete the paper. (original abstract)

The aim of the article is a presentation of the report of the latest studies carried out at the Faculty of Management and Economics of Services (University of Szczecin, Poland) on analyzing the quality level of two business intelligence system (Power BI and Tableau Public). Analysis was based on the multi-criteria analytic hierarchy process AHP method, a tool that is used for determining the main criteria of BI system evaluation. By structuring the problem based on the hierarchy, it is possible to better understand the level of quality, the criteria to be used and the alternatives to be evaluated. The proposed research concept can be used to analyze business intelligence problems within the framework of specific subjects, such as system quality, quality of analysis, data cleaning and data connectors, visualization etc. Assuming a proper (the best description of the nature of BI systems) selection of descriptive characteristics and transforming them into real determinants, the AHP concept can be used to improve decisions on quality issues in BI system evaluation.(author's abstract)

A new fuzzy measure is presented in this paper. Using the assumption that the decision maker is able to provide the pairwise additivity degree between attributes, our method uses Zimmerman’s approach to solve the fuzzy multiobjective problem: a simple problem for computing fuzzy density is derived. Having done that, we use this new fuzzy measure to implement an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with dependent attributes using the Choquet integral. Our identification procedure for fuzzy density is much easier because it reduces the resolution complexity using a linear programming problem rather than the complicated power form used traditionally.

Investment in natural capital is increasingly necessary and urgent considering the increasing loss of global biodiversity and the associated social and economic losses. Ecosystem services are tools for quantifying the stock of natural capital and there is great concern about their assessment and valuation. However, there remains a substantial gap between the large amount of information available about ecosystem services and the information required to support decisions and this undermines the efficiency of their management. Multi-criteria analysis techniques can be very useful to efficiently develop decision-making processes to properly channel investment and optimize the costs associated with conservation. This paper proposes an innovative mixed methodology for multi-criteria analysis to assign priorities to ecosystem services in protected areas in terms of importance and vulnerability. The model was applied by a group of experts to prioritize 20 ecosystem services in the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park. In order to collect and analyze the individual valuations, a mixed method of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Goal Programming (GP) was used, and to aggregate the valuation criteria, a Joint Relevance Index (JRI) was used, which presents the relative importance of each service in an aggregated way. The results show that conservation policies should be primarily directed towards lifecycle maintenance and water conditions. Depending on the vulnerability of the services, conservation policies should be channeled towards provisioning services related to wild animals and wild plants. Considering the relative importance of services in the park, priority should be oriented to lifecycle maintenance, water conditions and intellectual interaction with the environment. A system exists which meets a prescription of the efficacious multiple criteria decision making support methodology. It is called the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The consistency control of human pairwise judgments about their preferences towards alternative choices appears to be the crucial issue in this concept. This research examines the efficiency of a recently proposed consistency index grounded on the redefined idea of triads inconsistency within Pairwise Comparison Matrices. The quality of the recently introduced proposal is studied and compared to other ideas with application of Monte Carlo simulations coded and run in Wolfram Mathematica 8.0.

The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) allows to create a final ranking for a discrete set of decision variants on the basis of an earlier pairwise comparison of all the criteria and all the decision variants within each criterion. The properties of the obtained ranking depend on the quality of pairwise comparisons; this quality can be evaluated on the basis of consistency measured by means of certain measures. The paper discusses a mathematical model which is the foundation of the AHP and a starting point for a new method which allows to significantly reduce - and even eliminate - the inconsistency of pairwise comparisons measured by the consistency index. The proposed method allows to reduce the consistency index well below the threshold of 0.1.(original abstract)

W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienie wielokryterialnego wspomagania decyzji grupowych z zastosowaniem metod AHP oraz Promethee GDSS. Metody te wykorzystano do rozwiązania problemu decyzyjnego, w którym należało uwzględnić różne warianty decyzyjne, podlegające ocenie według wielu kryteriów.

This paper compares two multi-criteria group decision-making methods, AHP and Promethee GDSS, which were used to rank project proposals for participatory budgeting and identify the proposals with the most positive impact on the sustainable development of the city. The methods were used to support the decision-making process where various decision alternatives had to be considered and assessed against a number of criteria. Where multi-criteria decisions are taken, the decision-maker should have a good knowledge of the selection criteria. This knowledge is not always quantified. The final evaluation made by the group should be quite objective, i.e. independent of the preferences and opinions of individual decision-makers.(original abstract)
