Sociopolitical transformations in Poland affect every aspect of life, changing the social structures and forms of participation in culture. They coincide with fast technological advancement, and both processes have to be reflected in the statistics. Unfortunately, cultural statistics in Poland became petrified twenty years ago. This fact touches profoundly on library statistics, which in its current form ignores the new needs of users. In particular, it doesn’t respond to the questions asked by the ministries and other state offices. These institutions fund the libraries’ activity, and so have the right to know something regarding the efficiency of their public spending. It is widely accepted that the modern library should perform not only the role of an access point for books, but also the function of a cultural institution. The latter signifies that libraries have to offer new services (e.g.: animation workshops, homework clubs, technological counseling). We believe that statistics serve not only to describe the libraries’ reality, but also to influence the decisions made by the libraries’ directors. The new aspects introduced into statistical form offer the possibility of promoting across the library management body new solutions to preserve the existence of the library itself and to position its role in the new cultural, technological and social landscape. This publication is a proposition for the adaptation of the anachronistic current state of library statistics to respond to the questions posed by the the government and by scientists of many disciplines (sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, library and information science). It will permit us to introduce all the necessery library policies and redefine the scopes of the library’s services. The importance of library statistics is often underrated, but we can say with certainty: there is no other instrument for observing so precisely the changes in the cultural life of the country. The library chain covers all the communes and municipalities. The library doesn’t demand special qualification of the user (in contrast to theaters and museums). All users are required to fill out the entrance form, giving specific information about their education, age, profession etc. The reconstruction of library statistics is crucial to the understanding and registration of cultural participation of the country’s population.

This paper addresses the problem of social roots of statistics, and particularly it highlights its role in transforming data into knowledge. Statistics is the only tool enabling effective move from the welfare state to the welfare society. Following the Gurria's call for a new generation of statistics, the main ways for the development of this new statistics are also discussed. The problem how to meet new social needs rising in information societies or societies based on knowledge is also briefly discussed.

The Department of Statistics and Records (WEiS) was one of the biggest organizational units of the Central Committee of Jews in Poland (CKZP) and also one of those that worked for the longest period of time. Its tasks focused on three areas: the keeping of records (registration of survivors), statistics, and search for missing persons (information). The registration of survivors among Polish Jews embraced over 200 000 persons, whose personal data were kept in the Central File in Warsaw and in the form of alphabetical lists compiled in the years 1945-1947 and released in three series ('Alphabetical list of Polish Jews'). At the same time, WEiS was collecting statistical materials concerning various areas of life of the Jews in Poland, including reports on the operation of local CKZP branches, and preparing aggregate statistical reports. The WEiS search and information campaigns elicited a huge volume of correspondence concerning the missing persons and containing data about tens of thousands of people. The collections of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw contain the Central File (some 280 000 cards), files and other registration lists, materials and statistical compilations as well as tens of thousand of letters from all over the world concerning the search for missing persons. In 2005, thanks to support from The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C., the WEiS archives were cleaned up and catalogued.

In this paper I deal with the most popular first names in Poland given to newborns in period 1995–2010. The first part contains lists of 100 of the most frequent male and female names. I have compared these lists with a similar sets for the earlier periods (1981–1990 i 1900–1994) compiled by K. Nowik. In the next part I present the detailed data for the naming variety in the examined period and with the help of the statistical calculations I show the increasing and decreasing trends for particular groups of names. It appeared that some names, which have similiar characteristics (such as sound, origin, structure), behave the same way, gaining or losing its popularity. In the last part I examined the geographic diversifications of names by comparing frequency lists for each voivodeship. In this case the study revealed the relationship between popularity of some group of names and the area of its appearance. It confirms that there is a regional specificity in naming in Poland and sometimes it crosses national borders.

Modern techniques have brought a lot of new opportunities for heating the households in the last two decades. Some of them, for example fireplaces, are fully new and have no tradition in our regions. In the contrary, the masonry stove continues the well-tried but forgotten technical solution. Regarding the recent trends emphasizing the energy saving and the utilization of renewable resources, the heaters burning biomass, such as wood, sawdust pellets, or sawdust briquettes enjoy great popularity. As resulting from the ENERGO 2004 statistic analysis, use of the above fuels is more or less a matter of peripheral importance as compared with other kinds of energy. In the town, it moves about 2,5% while it exceeds 10 % in the country. The individual types of heaters used in the households show certain conservatism. In Moravia, the most wood is burned in central-heating boilers or kitchen stoves while in Bohemia, fireplaces and local heaters occur in larger extent. This corresponds to the data drawn in towns where the proportion of fireplaces as compared to other types of heaters, exceed 25% in some regions. The next development will show whether it means the long-term trend or just the passing tendency.

The article deals primarily with names given the youngest male and female Poles in the 39 largest cities of Poland during the last 16 years (1995–2010). The author shows the general numerical structure of these anthroponyms – there are 6,292 such names. Also a subject of interest are anthroponyms of very low frequency (4,701 names have a frequency of being given one to three times). Then the author compares a ranking list of the one hundred most frequently selected given names in the largest cities of Poland during the years 1995–2010 with a similar list of frequencies for names most often used through the whole 20th century, pointing out similarities and differences between them. The author also discusses the statistic distribution of the masculine and feminine Polish names currently most popular in large cities. She notes the similarities and divergences in regard to preference in selection of these names in large cities in comparison with the capital (Warsaw), Mazowieckie voivodeship, and Poland as a whole.

The paper analyses the co-existence of the nations of Bosnia-Herzegovina in the context of the development of the national policy of socialist Yugoslavia. Its aim is to explain some of the key aspects involved in shaping the varied mosaic of the multi-ethnic environment of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The study analyses how far the number of ethnically mixed marriages corresponded to the high level of ethnic heterogeneity. It considers the degree to which the Bosnian population identified with the non-national Yugoslav category and how this was reflected in the ethnic composition of the country. The conclusion of the text is devoted to the development of the Moslem question and the affirmation of the Moslems as the sixth nation of Yugoslavia.

The article presents two examples of causal inferences in which theoretical problems exclude a possibility to infer causal relations from effects of experimental manipulation. The first example is a causal inference through mediation analysis. Particular emphasis has been placed on interpretation of direct, total and indi¬rect effects in Structural Equation Modelling. The second example concerns the causal impact of a dependent variable on its own explanatory model. In this example estimation of the causal model parameters can be done through the Linear Mixed Model.
