Humanistic psychology assumes that a child is by nature good and noble, and what he will become in the future depends on the kind of environment where the processes of upbringing and socialisation have taken place. Violence is beyond any doubt a social phenomenon which does not have any moral, territorial, or religious borders. Experiencing violence in childhood often determines undertaking destructive behaviours by an individual.

The paper presents a brief history of ressentiment (resentment) research in order to shed some light on the importance of these considerations for Security Studies (particularly for the analyses of the broad spectrum of issues related to ideologically motivated violence). Even a cursory overview of the usage of the created by Friedrich Nietzsche concept of ressentiment in social sciences and humanities enables to draw significant conclusions on the importance of interdisciplinarity in the development of reflection on security. Presentation of those conclusions is the main goal of this article.

The presented descriptive study involved three hundred and sixty five (365) lecturers and one thousand one hundred and sixty two (1,162) students selected from twelve (12) tertiary education institutions spread across North-Central Nigeria, making a thousand five hundred and twenty seven (1,527) respondents for the study. The main instrument used to obtain data for this study was adapted questionnaire, two research questions and three hypotheses were formulated. The hypotheses were tested using the t-test statistical technique at 0.05 level of signifi cance. Sociologists, religious leaders, the government, homes and school management should embark on enlightenment campaign programs.

In the mini-drama Rosamunde, the third of the five Prinzessinnendramen, which form the cycle Der Tod und das Mädchen I–V, Elfriede Jelinek quotes and paraphrases a romantic play written by Helmina von Chézy, a female author of the 19th century who earned little fame with her writings. This article explores the use of discursive violence to demonstrate that its use in the text uncovers social, structural and implicit violence against women. Based on Judith Butler’s idea of performativity, the paper examines the way Jelinek’s text destabilizes the standardized role models, which connect femininity with powerlessness, and further questions and disturbs the use of hate speech.

We live in the world of ubiquitous violence and on the other hand, reflection over violence. Violence breeds violence, but what breeds reflection over the violence? According to Pierre Bourdieu, Harrison C. White, and others, we can say that violence could help us understand the social reality and create a more sophisticated theory which gain together the antisocial behaviors and their social and individual backgrounds. Anton van Harskamp in preface to work Conflicts in Social Science shows, that social violence compare to the others social problems is not a safe field of research. Numerous social scientists find themselves caught up in an inextricable entanglement of scientific conflicts and societal antagonisms, we have thousands – as van Harskamp says – theories about violence and conflicts. In naïve thinking we can say, that violence rose as a form of social metaphor. Especially for Pierre Bourdieu violence and conflicts are connected with the politics of language. In his theoretical and sociological universe, social capital, symbolical power and habitus help understand the hidden dimension of symbolic violence shown as the violence without violence. The next author Slavoj Žižek explore the inner world of violence as a social and language mechanism. Bourdieu and Žižek follow by philosophical and narrative theories show violence in the everyday experience as a pattern of individual behavior. In contrary to these authors, Harrisona C. White explore social conflicts as a part of social networks and social spaces. The leading theories will be divided into three main subjects: metaphors, symbols and performances, especially the Randall Collins conception of interaction ritual chains is preferred as a crucial for understanding the impact of violence into the society.

The article deals with the subject of relations between theories of violence and the category of collective memory in relation to women’s war stories. The text introduces the issue of war and conflict, understanding the theory of violence, the category of collective memory and female war narratives, as well as the ways of their political interpretation. The interpretation is crucial because of method used in the research, meaning hermeneutics, but also because of the, presented here, perspective of polyphony.

The functions of the educational institutions include providing care, safety, educational and preventive activities for children. For the proper realisation of those tasks essential are accurate diagnosis/study of the school environment in this peculiar area/sphere and precise prearranging of specific actions against particular threats and among the particular groups of children. In the process of preventive planning the important role plays recognition of children’s developmental differences, forms of aggression, and individual needs of particular class teams.

This article attempts to look at selected new phenomena that have the characteristics of violence or are more or less associated with violence. The author presents the main characteristics of flam‑ ing, sexting (including sextortion), exclusion and happy slapping, while attempting to answer the question of which provisions of the Criminal Code they may involve. The problem of other selected phenomena concerning violence and crimes on the network which have recently gained the atten‑ tion of the media and researchers, is indicated.

The author questions the proposal to amend the Act – the Penal Code by supplementing its content with an article criminalizing the use of violence – other than as to a person – obstinately or in a manner significantly impeding another person in satisfying their basic needs in order to compel that person to a particular action, omission, or endurance. He points out inadequate arguments used by the authors of the bill to prove insufficient protection of tenants against forced eviction. It was pointed out that the scope of the proposed provision is not confined to behavior aimed at forcing tenants to leave their apartments, but provides for coverage of all cases of persistent violence. The author favors the fact that, under the bill, prosecution of offenses referred to in Article 191 § 1 and 1a of the Penal Code shall be initiated upon request of the injured person.

The author contends that any contestation or countercultural movement, no matter how generous, is bound to failure unless it develops as a rational project. Violence, as such, might help visibility, but, in the last analysis, it amounts to nothing more than self-gratifying narcissism, incapable to produce positive results, even less to satisfy the request of present day youth for a different, more open society.

In order to understand and resolve internal armed conflicts one must comprehend why and how people revolt, and under what conditions they brutalise i.e. increasingly resort to terrorism, banditry, brigandry, “gangsterism” and other forms of violence that violate contemporary local and/or present‑day international norms that I believe are, in the final analysis, all based on the principles of conscience, empathy and honour. Contemporary “global” or regional norms distinct from those of the rebelling community, and the norms of the regime community and/or colonial power, are also considered. My pessimistically formulated and thereby quite testable brutalisation theory combines theorising elements of disciplines ranging from cultural anthropology to military psychology, so as to better explain rebellions or any armed conflicts and their morally corrosive effects. The theory’s main variables are: violence‑values (my composite term) on proper and improper violence; conflict‑inducing motivations, in particular grievances, avarices, interests and ideologies, that bring about i.e. cause or trigger the conflict; combat‑stresses like fear, fatigue and rage resulting from or leading to traumas (and hypothetically to brutalities as well); and conflict‑induced motivations, in particular grievances, avarices, interest and ideologies, that happen by, through and during the conflict. The present paper is an exploratory introduction to an ambitious research project, succinctly titled “Brutalisation in Anti‑Imperial Revolts”, with advice and support from Professor Tomasz Polanski. The paper addresses the project’s relevance and its epistemological and methodological challenges. The project seeks to explain rebellion, banditry and other forms of violence that may or may not be inherently brutal. It seeks to ascertain the causes and degrees of any brutalisations i.e. increasing violations of norms during rebellions by peripheral, marginalised ethnic (indigenous) communities against their overlords in classical, medieval and “modern” (industrial) times. It introduces seven selected cases of “peripheral‑ethnic revolts” by indigenous communities – as (semi‑) state actors, non‑state actors or both (yet possessing at least residual ruling capabilities) – against Imperial powers across the ages, with a special focus on banditry, “brigandry” (brigandage), guerrilla and other forms of irregular warfare. The first stage of the research will analyse and compare the causes i.e. motivations and involved norms, sorts of violence and degrees of brutalisation in these seven cases.

The question of direct presentation of violence in films has long been controversial in the scientific world, and it is also of interest to the public. Since the 1960s the subgenre of gore is increasingly present in the mainstream cinematography, and the popular cinema is increasingly willing to adapt the aesthetic of violence typical for films belonging to this genre. Direct presentation of the destruction of human body has become part of contemporary popular culture. It is therefore an issue that should be considered from the sociological perspective. Accepting this as his starting point, the author asks in the article about the impact of virtual violence on the individual, and the extent to which gore films reflect the most important features of contemporary society. Using the example of three selected gore films Lipowicz tries to demonstrate, that the subgenre points to fundamental existential problems and questions of social integration in the era of postmodernity.

During the last 30 years a significant body of knowledge has been accumulated around the issue of hooliganism in professional soccer. However, very little has been said about violence in basketball, a sport that has the most incidents of violence after soccer and perhaps handball in Europe. Although an increasing number of violent incidents in basketball are reported in the mass media, research is limited. The sample consisted of 16 top Greek basketball referees, several of whom were distinguished even at an international level. The top referees were interviewed in a hotel prior to matches. The criteria for the choice of leading referees was based on their top refereeing experience (A1 division). Officials provide support for the notion that basketball is hostage to personal interests and is used as a means of pressure for the service of other aims. The theory for the social roots of hooliganism as well as the theory of frustration - aggression provide sufficient explanations for the interpretation of violence in basketball. Under work and family pressures young people become more aggressive and unload their disappointment in the sports ground, which they consider to be a suitable outlet.

The article addresses the problem of violence against the elderly people. The types of violence (physical, sexual, psychological, and economic) and their manifestations concerning this age category are revealed. It is noted that this phenomenon is latent, since official statistics is not available in the majority of European countries, and Ukraine in particular. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to prove the urgency and timely social-pedagogical prevention of violence against the elderly people, as well as to substantiate effective ways of its minimization, using the pro-social potential of the information society. In order to realize this goal, it is necessary to apply such methods of research as analysis, synthesis, comparison and generalization of results in relation to the stated problem. An analysis of the regulatory framework provides grounds for concluding that it is extremely difficult to gather sufficient evidence to justify the prosecution in court, due to the weak legal framework and vague definitions of the offense in the specific articles of the relevant codes. In this regard, the offender’s guilt is difficult to prove. As a result, offenders often avoid punishment and continue to commit violence. Social-pedagogical prevention of violence is a complex of measures aimed at preventing the violation of human rights in respect to its honor, dignity and living conditions. Such work should be carried out with all age categories: with children in order to prevent peer violence and protection of childhood, among parents in order to identify adequate methods of raising children and developing interpersonal skills (parents, relatives, neighbors and others); with representatives of various social institutions serving this category of persons in order to enhance professionalism and prevent professional burnout, with the elderly people in order to train them to protect themselves from violent attacks and to help others with the “peer-to-peer” technology. The emphasis is made on the conditions of the information society, which influence the development or suppression of such a phenomenon. In particular, having the information on ways to avoid violence, the work of the relevant institutions and providing the necessary services to victims of violence, a person has the opportunity to protect himself and others. The prospect of further research is the study of the structure and content of social-pedagogical support for the elderly people in the conditions of the information society.
