The number of enterprises and working places on rural areas increased during last years. As compared to the period of eighties, the proportions in percentage of population employed in rural and urban areas has changed to the advantage of work places on rural areas. Since June 1995, to intenify mentioned transformations, the Agency of Agriculture Restructurization and Modernization lent some sums of money and gave credits to the persons and institutions that created new places of employment. Within 1995-1998 in total 4492 loans amounting to 151,7 million PLN were given what enabled to create 15475 new places of employment. The sum of 306,2 million PLN came to the enterprises in form of credits what resulted in 14,6 thousand new working places. According to the Institute's study, 13,5% farmers' families in 1996 were engaged in their own non-agricultural economic activities. Such family firms (usually one-person firms, without any employees) reached 85,7%, while the rest (14,3%) hired some employees (2.48 persons on an average). From that group of families only 8,8% resigned such form ofincome during 4 years. The initiatives on rural areas show considerable spatial differentiation and need effective supporting activities of the state and the social-professional business organizations in creating new places of employment - particularly in the regions of north-eastern Poland. An important form of assistance in continuation of that policy should be further financial loans and preferential credits for the enterprises.
