Further spatial development of the Port of Gdansk should be shaped basing on a holistic vision, subjected to the resources for sustainable development, and shaped in close co-operation by both the local and port authorities. The spatial structure of the Port of Gdansk forms a friendly basis for such development, and constitutes a solid value of the Gdansk' urban space and of the whole Three-Town urban area, connecting history and modernity, technical and economical values with a rich historical heritage. Port of Gdańsk, development
EN
Due to the pro-ecological character of sea transport, shipping lines connecting the Port of Gdansk with its fore-field always appear as elements facilitating sustainable development of the seaport, seen as an integration of the spatial and transport order with the economical, ecological and social order [ 1]. Sustainable development of the Port of Gdansk is also facilitated by its specific location in the Baltic Sea basin. It results from the fact that Gdansk, as all the other large Baltic ports, is serviced from the fore-field side mainly by ferry and rolro lines and by shipping connections within the multimodal transport system (container services and feeder services), and in the future also by short sea shipping lines. Considering transport accessibility of a port from the hinterland, the essence of sustainable development is related to two factors: (I) location of the port in relation to the national and Central-European transport network, and (2) accessibility of the port to infrastructural connections of various modes of hinterland transport. The influence of both factors must be also related to the present state of the transport network, connecting the Port of Gdansk with the hinterland, and to the future state, which will be achieved in result of expected changes in the transport system connecting the port and hinterland.

Pump technology is of considerable interest owing to a number of reasons, namely: 1. pumps are the second most numerous group of machines in use, after electric motors, 2. pumps use up to 25% of electrical energy generated, 3. modernization of pumps and pump installations can result in a 20% reduction in power consumption or more, 4. pump quality is the basic condition for efficient and reliable operation of the majority of industrial processes, municipal facilities, mining, etc. Pump technology now has the possibility of progress, due mainly to overcoming two obstacles: imperfections in methods of classical hydro-mechanics for designing flow channels and inaccuracy of pump control. The first serves to enhance pump efficiency and the second enables the proper design and operation of pump systems.

Coastal area fine resolution models have been developed to enhance the operational and ecosystem modelling in the Gulf of Finland. A user inteiface has been developed for both the transport and ecosystem models which both utilise 3D precalculated flow fields. Also a user inteiface development for the chemical module has been ongoing in the year 2001. A two year project plan indicates the future activities related to the operational Helsinki-Espoo model development. The project includes development of system software, improvement of data communication links and troining workshops. A permanent flow measurement device and a new meteorological station, will be established to the Helsinki lighthouse and drift experiments arranged so that model validation can be continued.

The development of science, proceeding at a higher and higher speed, leads to the creation of new concepts, theories, and ideas. They constitute a progressive component of science. However, scientific development does not mean that everything that was accepted earlier has to be given up. New elements may be acquired and exist together with the old ones. Such old elements constitute a conservative component of science. That is why modern science shows itself as a wholeness constituted by the above-mentioned components.

The cosmologies of the pre-Socratics are usually considered to be independent, distinctive conceptions. Within the framework of these cosmologies, however, David J. Furley was able to differentiate “linear” and “centrifocal” conceptions, while Daniel W. Graham distinguished “meteorological” and “lithic” models; by way of these, they pointed out the common features of individual cosmologies and at the same time showed how they had evolved. It is, however, possible to conclude that they are both discussing the same thing. Pre-Socratic cosmologies, that is to say, experienced a significant development that was based on a change in the concept of the space of the universe. While in the Ionian archaic cosmologies of the 6th century BCE the space of the universe usually extended only between the flat Earth and the heaven, in the following century it was already being extended around the entire Earth. This led to a change not only in the concept of celestial bodies and their orbits, but in additional cosmological aspects as well. The cause of this development was Parmenides’ conception of the space of the universe, consisting of a spherical heaven with a spherical Earth in its center.

Ukraine has been going through a series of political and economic crises, notably the Euromaidan revolution and the Russian aggression and subsequent economic downturn. These events triggered fresh transnational diaspora-led activities such as the ‘London Euromaidan’ and the ‘Warsaw Euromaidan’. This paper analyses Ukrainian diaspora volunteerism in the UK and Poland and explores how the Ukrainian diaspora engages and contributes economically, socially, politically and culturally to the development of Ukraine. Drawing on fieldwork in both countries, three main findings were identified. First, due to the events in Ukraine, the Ukrainian diaspora has mobilised, grown stronger and became more united, whilst transforming from a more inward-looking to a more outward-looking community which, as a result, is now more and critically engaging with Ukrainian affairs. Second, the Ukrainian diaspora has the willingness, power and resources to contribute to the development of the home country, claiming to be recognised as an important stakeholder in the development of Ukraine. Thirdly, the Ukrainian government’s lack of recognition of the contribution of the Ukrainian diaspora is one of the most significant barriers to more comprehensive diaspora involvement in development.

Phytoplankton of Sulejow Reservoir was investigated in 1979-1993. Over that period, blue-green algae were usually a constant component of phytoplankton. Their percentage in the total phytoplankton biomass widely varied both from season to season and from year to year. Maximum values were noted in summer, although sometimes a shift of peak development toward spring or even winter was observed. The development was not uniform in the whole area of the reservoir; blue-green algae dominated in the middle and downstream, that is in the deepest parts of the reservoir. The main components of phytoplankton included Microcystis aeruginosa Kţtz. and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs.

Nowadays, no one could question the fact that in the post-communist countries the laws of economics work in the same way as in the countries in which the communist system has never prevailed. Yet the long-term results of a strategy implemented in the 1990s for the economic transformation, for social life have become visible just now which means that a formulation of a diagnosis encompassing the entirety of the results of “the shock” transformation for the individual aspects of social life is possible only now. From this point of view, we are still living in the period which one can recognise for the great economic experiment.

Corruption has become a major global problem. Proponents of the “good corruption” thesis believe that in certain conditions corruption can be conducive to economic and political development. To them, corruption is “grease” that lubricates the rigid wheels of the bureaucratic machine, and is a legitimate mechanizm of political inclusion of the excluded masses. Yet, empirical analysis of the positive functions of corruption in the Soviet Union, the United States of America and certain Asian countries revealed that corruption is first and foremost a symptom of political and economic system dysfunction. One can speak of the positive functions of corruption only in the context of the system’s serious malfunction concerning the fulfillment of the society’s expectations coupled with the lack of prospects for this system’s reform.

The author considers the psychological aspects of globalisation, drawing attention to the possible effects of worldwide transformations. She presents definition problems and characterises the main currents and mechanisms of globalisation at the turn of the 20th and 21st century. Several standpoints of contemporaneity researchers concerning the evaluation of the effects of undergoing transformations have also been recalled. Noticing the diverse effects for development and the functioning of individuals and groups, she concentrates on a selected aspect of the living environment, namely, on diversity. She formulates the thesis that the heterogeneity of the environment, which constitutes a characteristic of globalisation, stimulates development in its various phases and fields, optimising particularly the functioning of reflective persons who enter into dialogue with contemporaneity.
