Celem badań było określenie wpływu zasolenia gleby na wzrost i rozwój wybranych gatunków roślin. Do badań wytypowano dwa gatunki z rodziny traw: kupkówkę pospolitą (Daetylis glomerata L.), życicę wielokwiatową (Lolium multijlorum L.) oraz dwa z rodziny motylkowatych: koniczynę łąkową (Trifolium pratense L.), wykę siewną (Vicia sativa L.). Warunki rozwoju roślin zostały zróżnicowane poprzez wprowadzenie zasolenia na poziomie O, 2, 6, 12 i 20 mS' cm-l w temp. 25°C.

A preliminary inventory of the vegetation at the proposed site of the botanical garden of Ekiti State University was carried out with a view to providing baseline information about the richness, distribution, economic and medicinal importance of the available plant species. This is to serve as fundamental knowledge for a periodical assessment of impact as the garden is fully established. The proposed site measures 1944 m2 in size. With the aid of a geographical compass, the entire land area was divided into four axes (i.e. north-, south-, east- and west-wards) to serve as guide for enumerating the plant species and assessing their pattern of distribution. Plant collections were made from the four axes by means of secateurs and vasculum and thereafter prepared as herbarium specimens which were stored in the University Herbarium. Forty plant families, comprising eighty-four species were noted for the inventory. The economic and medicinal importance of the plant species was recorded. As at the period of the exercise, five plant species were abundant, twenty-three were occasional, while fifty-six were rare. It was deduced that the site is a secondary forest, rich in plant species and would be less costly to be prepared for the establishment of a botanical garden. Goals of sustainable development and species conservation was set for the management of the said garden.

This paper presents the results of the heavy metals accumulation (Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe) in soils and plants (Typha angustifolia L., Urtica dioica L., Ranunculus sardous Crantz and Rumex Crispus L.) collected along the banks of the Sitnica River, which flows through various cities of Kosovo and is quite stressed due to the discharges of urban, industrial, and agricultural pollutants. The aim of this research was to verify the accumulation of heavy metals in water, soil and plants, since vegetables that used as food are cultivated in the vicinity of sample collection. The analyses were conducted with applied methodology in the analytic laboratory of Kosovo Agriculture Institute by using MP-AES 4200 for Cd and Cr, ASS-Scientific for Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb in plant samples, whereas 4100 MP-AES was used for determination of metals in soil. The results show variations in different metal values found in the samples of the analyzed soils and plants. The lowest values accumulation of the metals analyzed were recorded at A1 (Devetak Station) near the river source and did not contain anthropogenic influences, whereas the highest values were recorded at A3 (Kuzmin Station), which belongs to the middle flow of the Sitnica River that is polluted by wastewater (urban) discharges.

This work aimed to underline the dynamics of photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters of ‘Matador’ and ‘Andromeda’ spinach species after short-term 1 and 2 kJm–2 UV-B radiation effect. When plants reached 3–4 leaves growths stage, the exposure to 1 kJm–2 and 2 kJm–2 UV-B radiation was done once for 68 and 136 minutes, respectively. The photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters were determined 2, 24, 48 and 72 hours after exposure. The stimulating effect of UV-B emerged on the 3rd day after exposure. The positive effect of UV-B was more pronounced for ‘Matador’. The highest DPPH radical-scavenging capacity and the highest concentration of α-tocopherols were detected 24 hours after 2 kJ UV-B exposure, but the decrease in photosynthetic rate was the highest as well. Meanwhile, on the 3rd day after 1 kJ UV-B exposure, the indicators of oxidative stress of ‘Matador’ decreased, and the photosynthetic rate increased. This study highlights that low UV-B radiation acts as an eustress, by awaking positive changes in photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters of spinach.

The aim of the investigation carried out in 2006-2007 was to assess differences between 5 grass species and 5 species of plants belonging to meadow herbs in their ability to accumulate selenium. According to the results, among the grass species, the samples of Arrhenatherum elatuis L. had the highest average Se content (46 μg Se⋅kg-1 d.m.), and the lowest average Se amount was found in Holcus lanatus L. (24 μg Se⋅kg-1 d.m.). The content of Se in meadow weeds (70 μg Se⋅kg-1 d.m.) was approximately twice as high as in grasses (32 μg Se⋅kg-1 dm.). Among this group of plants, the highest Se accumulation occurred in Equisetum arvense L. (103 μg Se⋅kg-1 dm.) and the lowest – in Taraxacum officinale (59 μg Se⋅kg-1 dm.). Both in grasses and in meadow weeds, the Se content significantly depended on the amount of this element in soils. In the following species: Dactylis glomerata L., Arrhenatherum elatius L., Poa pratensis L. and Taraxacum officinale, the amount of accumulated Se was also conditioned by the soil’s abundance in organic and total C.

Woodlands in different regions of Central Europe are mosaics diversified by floristic richness and age. The age of woodlands is understanded as the period of permanent existence of woodland phytocenosies, or at least a woodland site, without any transformations, even for a short period of time, to agricultural fields or any other areas managed in different ways. Forests which occur in identical habitats are often differentiated of their species richness. Data gathered from studies carried out to date, indicate that the age of a forest plays a significant role in the way plant communities develop. This relationship, however, is modified by a number of other factors. In this paper, an attempt was made to answer the following questions: 1) are there any differences in this relationship between woodland age and richness, and species composition of recent and ancient forests, 2) does the age of a forest affect the richness of vascular plant species in the layers of their vertical structure, the number of species of various phytosociological groups, 3) which of the selected factors affecting the processes of migration and colonization, alongside age, affect the richness of species noted in forest communities. The Ojców National Park (OPN) was chosen as a study area because its forests are diversified by age, from the younger than 71 to the older than 216 years and because the history of the forests there have been well documented. Age of selected woodland patches was determined using a ‘Map of distribution woodlands of different age in the Ojców National Park’, whereas the remaining factors were either measured or determined in the field or using available sources. In order to establish relationships, a multiple regression model was used. The results obtained in the study prove that, in OPN, the age of the forest is the principal factor affecting the overall number of vascular species. Old forests are most abundant in species, and many plant taxa occur only in such forests. Within the same age classes, the number of taxa is often diversified because of the impact of habitat factors e.g., humidity, and it is also linked to the history of the development of these forests. The factors which affect the species richness in a particularly beneficial way is the presence of rocks, as well as the diverse relief of a given area. Much less significant are exposure and inclination of the terrain. The age of a forest significantly affects the number of species in the herb layer, whereas it does not demonstrate significant correlations with respect to shrub or tree layers. The number of species in fertile deciduous forests are also positively affected, whereas no such relations were found in coniferous forest species. The results also indicate that the forest’s surface area, along with a specific combination of factors, may only have a limited effect on the richness of plant species in the area.

Twinflower (Linnaea borealis L.) is a widespread circumboreal plant species belonging to Linnaeaceae family (previously Caprifoliaceae). L. borealis commonly grows in taiga and tundra. In some countries in Europe, including Poland, twinflower is protected as a glacial relict. Chemical composition of this species is not well known, however in folk medicine of Scandinavian countries, L. borealis has a long tradition as a cure for skin diseases and rheumatism. It is suggested that twinflower has potential medicinal properties. The new study on lead secondary metabolites responsible for biological activity are necessary. This short review summarizes very sparse knowledge on twinflower: its biology, distribution, conservation status, chemical constituents, and describes the role of this plant in folk tradition of Scandinavian countries.

Zimoziół północny (Linnaea borealis L.) jest szeroko rozpowszechnionym gatunkiem cyrkumborealnym, należącym do rodziny Linnaeaceae (wcześniej Caprifoliaceae). Licznie rośnie w tajdze i tundrze.

Gypsophila aretioides, a cushion form evergreen plant, is a high potential wild species ideal for the use in rock garden, or as a ground cover in sunny dry areas. This plant has the competence to be developed as a new ornamental species. The purpose of this experiment was to provide an efficient micropropagation protocol for G. aretioides in order to facilitate the availability of this species for further studies of domestication. The influence of various concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and thidiazuron (TDZ) was investigated for multiplication stage. TDZ at low concentration of 0.05 mg dm−3 resulted in the maximum shoot (9.7) and leaf (42.3) number. The shoots were best rooted on MS medium containing 0.6 mg dm–3 indolebutyric acid (IBA) with 7.8 roots per shoot. Despite achievement of a successful protocol for in vitro multiplication and root induction of Gypsophila, low survival rate was obtained when rooted explants were exposed to ex vitro conditions. This is an important issue, which requires particular consideration and further studies. The possible reasons contributing to the low acclimatization rate of this species are being discussed.
