The article sets out to compare the political culture and civic participation of populations in selected regions in the Czech Republic using data from the survey 'The Influence of Region-Specific Factors on the Formation of the Political Outlook of Voters', which was conducted by the Institute of Sociology in 2000-2002. The fundamental question it poses is whether the populations in selected regions differ in terms of their patterns of political culture and level of civic participation. Almond and Verba's classic definition of types of political culture is supplemented with one more type - alienation. This leads to four quantitative variables for defining the pattern of the population's mixed political culture. The level of civic participation is defined as the number of memberships in voluntary organisations. The results show that the pattern of political culture in the selected regions is almost identical. The regions do not even differ in terms of the amount of membership in voluntary civic organisations, that is, in the level of civic participation. The article concludes that in terms of political culture and civic participation the Czech Republic is quite homogeneous and is a suitable territorial unit for comparisons of political culture.

The article focuses on one of the factors affecting the political representation of women: political culture. Defined as the level of egalitarian gender culture in a country as related to politics in particular, its open forms can be measured in public opinion polls. But the article focuses on two less apparent forms of differentiation between the sexes in relation to politics. The first is the different way in which each gender relates conceptually to power. The second difference relates to the view that equal representation is not too important. An in-depth analysis using ideological analysis (a type of CDA) even reveals the existence of a divided concept of freedom according to gender, which is obscured by a set of other divides, such as politics versus culture, public versus private, love versus personal autonomy.

The paper examines the fundamental concept of the political publicist Milos Stefanovic, which in the 1880ies and 1890ies suggested the transformation of Slovak political thinking as well as abandoning the voluntarily adopted passive attitude. Stefanovic developed a consistent conception of national politics based on self-responsible, independent political work grounded in patriotic self-criticism. He was also one of the prime movers of the cooperation between nationalities in Hungary as well as a critique of the distorted political culture of the government establishment.

This article discusses new German studies on the specifical political role of the opera theater in the 'long' 19th century in Central and Eastern Europe. They show the close relations between the modernization of theatre practice, culture as a whole and the changes in political culture. The transition from the (theatre) culture of the 'word' to the preference of the 'optical' played a major role in this process.

The author aims at both reviewing the previous sociological studies devoted to the Western Lands as well as proposing the project for the future studies on this area. According to the author, the major drawback of the previous research is its strict focus to the region. The up to date research was primarily considering the two groups of factors: the ones contributing to the emergence of an integrated community at the Western Lands or the ones influencing the acceleration of the Western Lands' integration with the rest of the country. In these studies the key categories were normalization, stabilization, adaptation and assimilation. Yet, the author contends that by far more intriguing research agenda lies in the question of if and how the novel post-war shape of the Polish state has been internalized by the society. This research agenda is of particular relevance to the students of political culture. The research on the Western Lands has to be brought onto national level. In new research focused on political culture the issues of the transformation of historical consciousness and Polish national identity shall gain the prime importance.

Low level of the Poles’ participation in political life has been a problem widely discussed in the literature. For over twenty years many research works have undertaken this problem and described such phenomena as the exceptionalism of the political culture and the mentality of the Polish society. This paper delivers an overview and a critical analysis of the state of the scientific reflection. It focuses on semantics of this reflection, a problem of the language as well as the terminology used by the Polish authors. The main thesis is that the discourse on the Poles’ (as citizens) political apathy is a dysfunction of public sphere. The features of the discourse (such as genetism, eclecticism of the concept and ideas or inconclusiveness) provide no grounds for making practical recommendations.

The article aims at characteristics of the multiple approaches to the theory of the political culture of the Balkan countries. The text begins with a theoretical definition of the concept of the political culture, follows the analysis of the some views on culture and society in the Balkans. The study is focused mainly to three countries of the former Yugoslavia – Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. The strong emphasis is given on the use of the cleavage theory. The author concludes that the cleavage theory can bring new empirically provable facts on research of political culture of the Balkan counties.
