In consequence of modernization changes, the object of rural sociology gradually becomes no longer up-to-date and urgently needs to be redefined by way of intensifying − as postulated in this paper − two principal research trajectories. The first one forces searching for contemporary differences between rural and urban type of dwelling, which are to be studied based on dismantling the hitherto perception of the countryside; many traditional analytical categories should be left to historians of the social thought and new categories should be found which are better suited to contemporary realities. In the first instance, this seems to require a new, precise definition of the term ‘countryside’ as a cultural phenomenon which integrates the experience of natural and social environment with mental needs of humans. The other direction of the postulated, re-defining actions needs to take into consideration a quite natural interest taken in rural areas by other scientific disciplines, inter alia: biology, ecology, demography, philosophy and psychology. The approaches and research perspectives used in these fields as well as formulated judgements have always exerted a significant influence on the findings of sociology relating to rural matters and problems. Furthermore, only by joining even more cognitive efforts of many scientific disciplines and sub-disciplines can we be in a position to contribute to a more satisfying explanation of the nature of complex social facts which make up the present-day idea of the countryside and the phenomenon of living in the countryside.

The paper presents results of the rheological properties of cement CEM I 42,5R at 15°C. Rheological properties of cement pastes were calculated from the resulting flow curves using various rheological models. The Bingham, Herchel–Bulkley and Casson models were used to estimate the stress strain relations. It was observed that the rheological properties of cement pastes varied with the change of the rheological models used for their calculation.

Mathematical models of low - temperature cereal grain drying in silos with vertical and horizontal (radial) airflow were formulated. The models are structural, derived logically by deduction method on the basis of heat and mass transfer laws. Computer program of proposed models is friendly to user and enables comprehensive analysis of the results with respect to possible steering of results structure. Effect of various parameters of the process on its course may be investigated in simulation experiments.

Water absorption of concrete is an important property of concrete used in road and bridge engineering. The problem which arises in the course of researches of water absorption is to evaluate the results. This feature can be tested by several methods. In this paper the influence of the size of samples and the way of curing on results was tested.

The processes of accession to the European Union, which are considered to be the most important instrument of the Polish rural community's adjustment to the requirements of functioning in the global and information society, lead, among other things, to the marginalisation of agriculture as the principal source of income for the majority of farmers' families. Therefore, a need arises to find a new place for them in the economy. This calls for the creation of many new jobs, especially in rural areas but outside agriculture, in the situation of a diminishing offer of full-time occupations. Unfortunately, the residents of rural areas - especially farmers, seem to be insufficiently prepared for efforts aiming to ensure them income from several different sources. This fact, combined with the present extremely difficult financial situation of the residents of rural areas and the high level of unemployment, is responsible for the gravely pessimistic assessment of not only their own prospects for the future but also the future of rural areas as the place of residence and work. However, the rural economic system has always been characterised by the presence of the processes of diversification of the rural population's income sources, and the last four decades of the 20th century have proved decisive for the strengthening of a multi-vocational model of economic activity conducted in Europe's rural areas. Such model is regarded to be the principal and necessary condition of their sustainable development.

The complete designing process of High Performance Concrete was conducted. Complete set of test was carried out including testing of rheological properties of cement pastes, mortars compressive strength, aggregate properties, concrete mixture properties and concrete specimens compressive strength. The concrete characterized by compressive strength over 100 MPa was obtained.

In this paper presenter the method of optimizing the aggregate composition according to Kuczyński is presented. The aggregate gradation is one of the most important factors which influence the properties of hardened concrete. Composition of aggregate because of this method allowed to obtained High Performance Concrete.
