A source of valuable n-3 fatty acids, oils are derived from macadamia nuts, peanuts, red palm, sesame, rice, apricots, and safflower. The ratio of total polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated Σ UFA/Σ SFA in the studied oils changed from 2.88 to 13.33. SFA saturated fatty acid content is the highest in the oil and red palm canola CPA (24.59%) and oil from rice (25.80%), while the lowest is in the safflower oil (6.98%), apricot (9.85%) and rape (7.30%). The ratio of fatty acids C18:3 (n-6) /C18:3 (n-3) for the tested oils is nutritionally beneficial for humans. Oleic acid, C18:1, the highest is for olive oil ca. 72–78% oil and safflower ca. 77%. Sesame oil contains at least 39%. To compare their susceptibility to oxidation of fats, the value relationships Σ C18:3 /C18:1 and C18:2 /Σ C18:3 can be used.

This paper presents the results of an analysis of the composition of sheep milk fatty acids. Milk from Olkuska sheep, Polish mountain sheep, and crossbreeds of Polish mountain sheep and Friesian sheep (75% x 25%) was examined. The fatty acid profiles were analysed according to the month of lactation. Significant differences in fatty acid composition were observed for each breed. In the third and fourth month of lactation, in the milk of crossbreeds and Polish mountain sheep, respectively, saturated fatty acid content significantly decreased while the unsaturated and short-chain saturated fatty acid content increased. In the milk of Olkuska sheep, the content of short-chain saturated fatty acids and saturated fatty acids in the first and third months of lactation was significantly higher, while the content of oleic acid, mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids was significantly lower than in the second and fourth months. It was also observed that the fatty acid profile of sheep’s milk in the first two months of lactation was similar.

Alterations in membrane lipid composition, particularly fatty acids content is known to result in functional and structural changes. Dietary lipids and physical activity or stress play an important role in this change. It was of interest to study the influence of swimming in different temperatures on the content of fatty acids in the phospholipids of the erythrocyte membranes of rats. Our research demonstrated a significant influence of swimming on the content of fatty acids in the phospholipids of the erythrocyte membranes of rats. These changes of fatty acids, particularly the decrease of arachidonic acid and significant increase of saturated fatty acids in the phospholipids of the erythrocyte membranes in swimming rats may be induced by oxygen radicals generated in different kinds of stress.

The biochemical composition (carbohydrates, protein, lipids, fatty acids and amino acids) of the nereid polychaete Pseudonereis anomala Gravier 1901, from a shallow part of the Alexandria coast (Egypt), was studied seasonally. The results revealed that P. anomala had a lower water content, higher carbohydrates and protein, but approximately similar or higher lipid levels than several other polychaetes. Fatty acids appeared to be dominated by unsaturated acids, constituting seasonally 49.6-81%, while saturated acids reached high amounts in winter and spring (23.3 and 38.3% respectively). C20:5n-3 was the major polyunsaturated fatty acid, accompanied by small amounts of C18:4n-3, C20:4n-6, C16:1n-7 and C20:1n-9. C18:0 dominated the saturated fatty acids for most of the year, except in autumn when C16:0 was the major one.

Introduction. Adrenoleukodystrophy is a genetic disorder linked to the X chromosome, in which the peroxisomal beta-oxidation process is disturbed. It is a metabolic disease that results in the accumulation of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs - very long chain fatty acids) responsible for the symptoms of damage to the adrenal cortex, gonads and the brain. Aim. A clinical case is reported. Description of case. This article describes the case of a 64-year-old woman who had neurological symptoms for many years, gradually increasing without significant improvement after the treatment (periodic steroid therapy). Conclusion. Based on tests (including the determination of the ABCD1 gene and very long chain fatty acids - VLCFA), adrenoleukodystrophy was suspected.

Chemical composition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) isolated from an effective (97) and ineffective (87) strains of R. l. viciae has been determined. LPS preparations from the two strains contained: glucose, galactose, mannose, fucose, arabinose, heptose, glucosamine, galactosamine, quinovosamine, and 3-N-methyl-3,6-dideoxyhexose, as well as glucuronic, galacturonic and 3-deoxyoctulosonic acid. The following fatty acids were identified: 3-OH 14:0, 3-OH 15:0, 3-OH 16:0, 3-OH 18:0 and 27-OH 28:0. The ratio of 3-OH 14:0 to other major fatty acids  in LPS 87 was higher that in LPS 97. SDS/PAGE profiles of LPS indicated that, in lipopolysaccharides, relative content of S form LPS I to that of lower molecular mass (LPS II) was much higher in the effective strain 97 than in 87. All types of polysaccharides exo-, capsular-, lipo, (EPS, CPS, LPS, respectively) examined possessed the ability to bind faba bean lectin. The degree of affinity of the host lectin to LPS 87 was half that to LPS 97. Fatty acids (FA) composition from bacteroids and peribacteroid membrane (PBM) was determined. Palmitic, stearic and hexadecenoic acids were common components found in both strains. There was a high content of unsaturated fatty acids in bacteroids as well as in PBM lipids. The unsaturation index in the PBM formed by strain 87 was lower than in the case of strain 97. Higher ratio of 16:0 to 18:1 fatty acids was characteristic for PMB of the ineffective strain.

Abstract: Introduction: Diabetes is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease. There is a growing body of evidence pointing towards intra-myocellular lipid accumulation as an integral etiological factor. Here we aimed to determine the effect of two common fatty acids on lipid accumulation and cellular stress in primary cardiomyocytes. Methods: We evaluated lipid accumulation biochemically (by triacylglyceride assay and radiolabeled fatty acid uptake assay) as well as histologically (by BODIPY 493/503 staining) in mouse and rat neonatal cardiomyocytes treated with saturated (palmitate) or mono-unsaturated (oleate) fatty acids. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress was evaluated by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting. Cell viability was assessed by propidium iodide staining. Results: We found that both oleate and palmitate led to significant increases in intracellular lipid in cardiomyocytes; however there were distinct differences in the qualitative nature of BODIPY staining between oleate and palmitate treated cardiomyocytes. We also show that palmitate caused significant apoptotic cell death and this was associated with ER stress. Interestingly, co-administration of oleate with palmitate abolished cell death, and ER stress. Finally, palmitate treatment caused a significant increase in ubiquitination of Grp78, a key compensatory ER chaperone. Conclusion: Palmitate causes ER stress and apoptotic cell death in primary cardiomyocytes and this is associated with apparent differences in BODIPY staining compared to oleate treated cardiomyocytes. Importantly, the lipotoxic effects of palmitate are abolished with the co-administration of oleate.

Probiotics are alive bacteria that have a healthy effect on the hosts and are found in large quantities in the soil and foods. The most recommended probiotics as commercial are the some species of Lactobacillus sp., Bifidobacterium sp., and Streptococcus sp. The fatty acids are formed by the colonic gut flora from dietary fibres, which manage to escape the host's enzymatic digestive systems in the small intestine. Dietary fibres that manage to reach the large intestine are available for several bacterial fermentative reactions. The fermentation of the different dietary fibres leads to an increase in concentrations of several short-chain fatty acids, especially butyrate, propionate and acetate, in the lumen of the proximal regions of the large intestine. In this review, we acquainted that the relationship between fatty acids and probiotic bacteria affects some various health ailments.

Mushrooms can be used in diet as nutraceutical or functional foods for promoting and maintaining health quality and health longevity. Mushrooms just like medicinal plants can be utilized in the form of powder or extract as curative agents of several diseases and in providing a healthy diet. In current study, ten different mushroom species were collected from Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The selected mushrooms were assessed for their nutritional value, biological activities and fatty acid profiling. Before extraction, proximate analysis of all selected mushrooms was performed. Protein, fat, ash and total carbohydrate contents ranged from 10-30%, 0.43-8.08%, 1.1-9.14%, 12.47-92.52%, respectively. Then mushrooms were extracted with three different solvents n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol for the assessment of their antioxidant potentials through different antioxidant assays like total phenolics, total flavonoid contents and DPPH inhibition assay. The order of antioxidant potential in different solvent is methanol>Ethyl acetate>n-hexane. Quantification of fatty acids by GC/MS analysis revealed that stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linolenic acid were present in significant quantity in different mushrooms and unsaturated fatty acids were found abundant over saturated fatty acids in all the selected mushrooms. So presence of fatty acids in studied samples is one of the main biologically active ingredients from mushrooms. The study concluded that the selected mushrooms from different regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir are of nutritional importance having significant antioxidant potential and contains several unsaturated fatty acids which contribute to the nutritional value of mushrooms.

The study examines the effects of haloxyfop (herbicide) and cerulenin (antibiotic) on de novo biosynthesis of fatty acids and complex lipids in roots of two sensitive species: wheat and maize. Seedlings were grown in hydroponic cultures with addition of [1-14C]acetate (control) and [1-14C]acetate together with one of the tested substances. Neither haloxyfop nor cerulenin prevented the uptake of [1-14C]acetate by the roots of tested species. In contrast, a strong inhibition of de novo biosynthesis of fatty acids was observed after a 4-h treatment. This phenomenon, however, tended to disappear with treatment time. After a 24-h incubation, the amount of radioactivity in de novo biosynthesized fatty acids in 1-cm-long root tips was up to three times higher than in the untreated control. In the "rest of roots", restoration of fatty acid biosynthesis capacity was less pronounced. Besides the effect on fatty acid biosynthesis, both tested inhibitors strongly suppressed the de novo biosynthesis of non-fatty acid-containing lipids. Analyses of radioactivity in individual lipid classes showed that after a 4-h treatment with haloxyfop or cerulenin the biosynthesis of most of the lipid classes was inhibited, although not to the same extent. After a 24-h treatment, an inhibition of de novo biosynthesis of some of the lipids was still observable, whereas the biosynthesis of others, especially phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidic acid, was strongly up-regulated. Contrary to the mainstream view that inhibition of fatty acid biosynthesis is the cause of haloxyfop and cerulenin phytotoxicity, the obtained results suggest multidirectional effects of both inhibitors.

Fatty acids (FAs) are one the most essential substances in intrauterine human growth. They are involved in a number of energetic and metabolic processes, including the growth of cell membranes, the retina and the nervous system. Fatty acid deficiency and disruptions in the maternal-placental fetal metabolism of FAs lead to malnutrition of the fetus, hypotrophy and preterm birth. What is more, metabolic diseases and cardiovascular conditions may appear later in life. Meeting a fetus' need for FAs is dependent on maternal diet and on the efficiency of the placenta in transporting FAs to fetal circulation. "Essential fatty acids" are among the most important FAs during the intrauterine growth period. These are α-linolenic acid, which is a precursor of the n-3 series, linoleic acid, which is a precursor of the n-6 series and their derivatives, represented by docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid. The latest studies have shown that medium-chain fatty acids also play a significant role in maternal-fetal metabolism. These FAs have significant effect on the transformation of the precursors into DHA, which may contribute to a relatively stable supply of DHA - even in pregnant women whose diet is low in FAs. The review discusses the problem of fatty acid metabolism at the intersection between a pregnant woman and her child with reference to physiological pregnancy, giving birth to a healthy child, intrauterine growth restriction, preterm birth and giving birth to a small for gestational age child.

Fluffy layer suspended matter (FLSM) and surface sediment samples from the Pomeranian Bay were examined for fatty acid, lipid and organic matter contents. FLSM is a several-centimetre-thick layer of fairly concentrated particulate matter lying on the sea floor significantly affecting the flux of matter to depositional basins. Analyses of fatty acids were used to establish sources and decomposition rates of labile organic matter along a transect from the shallow, highly dynamic, Odra estuary to the Arkona Basin, a deep, low energy, depositional area. In FLSM and sediments respectively, the ranges of organic matter contents were 4.0-25.0% and 5.1-23.0%, those of lipids 0.1-5.4% and 0.30-1.67%, and those of fatty acids 50-991 žg g-1 dry wt. and 100-546 žg g-1 dry wt. In shallow waters, the contents of these compounds are very variable, mirroring variations in biological activity and hydrological conditions. The high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids in shallow areas indicates the presence of fresh, undegraded, labile organic matter of autochthonous origin. Fatty acids, the most labile components, are transported as suspended matter attached to minerals and finally accumulated in the depositional area in the form of condensed organic macromolecules. The intensity of bacterial decomposition of organic matter in this system is reflected in the high percentage of branched fatty acids. The low fatty acid content in the organic matter is attributed to the high rate of decomposition of the labile organic matter. No linear correlation was found between the contents of fatty acids and lipids.

In this study, the effects of different feeds on fatty acid composition in the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) were investigated. The fatty acid composition in the Chinese mitten crab was significantly correlated with the type of feed source provided. Differences between the feed groups pertained mainly five fatty acids: oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The content of EPA and DHA was higher in the group of frozen trash fish than in the group of formulated feed. On the other hand, the content of oleic acid, linoleic acid and palmitic acid was higher in the formulated feed group than in the frozen trash fish group. There were significant differences in the nutritional value of the Chinese mitten crab reared under different feed sources, i.e. Chinese mitten crabs reared with the frozen trash fish feed were larger than those reared with the formulated feed, especially as regards the ω-3/ω-6 PUFA ratio and essential fatty acid levels.

The paper presents the study on the content and composition of lipids in the saprophytic fungus of forest soil – Absidia coerulea 93. Both free fatty acids (FFAs) and fatty acids being a part of triacylglycerols have been characterized. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was employed to separate different classes of compounds from the fungus extract, whereas Gas Chromatography (GC) and Mass Spectrometry combined with Gas Chromatography (GC-MS) were used for separation and identification of the individual compounds. Length of chains of the fatty acids, both FFAs and in triacylglycerols, ranged from C14 to C24. In both cases twoC18 acids were dominant: oleic and palmitic.

Lipopolysaccharides of seven Bradyrhizobium strains and three whole-cell fatty acid preparations from bacteria isolated from nodules of Sarothamnus scoparius (Common Broom) were studied for the presence of very long chain (ω-1)-hydroxy fatty acids. Several such fatty acids were identified. Among them, straight-chain as well as mono- and dimethyl branched acids with chains in the range from 26 to 34 carbon atoms were found. Pyrrolidides and 4,4-dimethyloxazoline derivatives were used to determine the branching position. Carbons at the (ω-10) and/or (ω-11) positions in alkyl chains were points of attachment of methyl groups. These data complete the structure of bradyrhizobial lipid A with important details. The obtained results can be applied in the chemotaxonomy of Bradyrhizobium.

This study was undertaken to determine mineral content, amino acid and fatty acid composition of the freshwater macroalga – Cladophora glomerata. The studies were based on the content comparison in algal biomass collected from a lake and cultured in a laboratory. To determine the ability of copper cumulating by macroalgae, Cladophora was cultured in the medium supplemented with Cu ions. This study indicated that the relative abundance of metals in filaments decreased in the following order: Ca > K > Mg > Na > Fe > Cu > Zn > Pb > As > Ni > Cd > Mn > Cr > Co. Total protein content ranged from 14.45% in Cladophora from a lake to 26.55% in Cladophora from a laboratory. The main amino acids analyzed were aspartic and glutamic acid. The fatty acid content in the dry matter of the extract varied depending on the extraction method used: ethylene alcohol (19.0%), acetone (34.5%) or supercritical fluid extraction (62.5%). Freshwater C. glomerata due to the macrominerals, trace elements, amino and fatty acids composition in the extracts can be a valuable resource for nutritional and cosmetic applications.

A gene for the Δturase specific to stearoyl-ACP (acyl carrier protein) was identified from yellow lupine (Lupinus luteus) cDNA and genomic libraries through the differential display method. The desaturase transcript appears in plants infected with Bradyrhizobium sp. (Lupinus) as revealed by Northern hybridization, RT-PCR and expression of β-glucuronidase under the desaturase promoter. A small amount of desaturase transcript was also detected in uninfected plants, which suggests that the gene does not belong to the strict nodule-specific sequences. The desaturase provides unsaturated fatty acids for additional cell membrane synthesis. During nodule and symbiosome development a peribacteroid membrane is formed and the requirement for membrane surface increases, thus the level of desaturase expression is also higher. Transgenic plants of Nicotiana tabacum with overexpression of the full-length lupine stearoyl-ACP desaturase sequence were obtained. They revealed higher content of unsaturated fatty acids (especially oleic acid) in comparison with control plants.

The quality and composition of suspended organic matter in near-bottom fluxes was determined at a mooring station (Odas Tonne) 20 km north-north-west of the Odra river mouth from June to December 1997. Salinity data and high concentrations of suspended matter near the bottom showed that the material entering the Pomeranian Bay from the Odra flood was recognisable for about three weeks. Vertical sediment fluxes, however, were low ~ 40 g m-2 d-1 compared to those measured later in the year ~ 60 g m-2 d-1. On the other hand, average molar CNP ratios in sediment trap material decreased from June to December 1997. These results may have been a combined effect of dilution and material transport in a layer close to the sediment surface. Fluff layers sampled at Odas Tonne in August 1997 contained a very high proportion of branched fatty acids of bacterial origin, indicating high rates of bacterial degradation. Long-chain fatty acids indicated an origin from higher terrestrial plants. The saturated fatty acid content was high in the surface sediment and the traps, increasing towards the top trap. The percentage composition of fatty acids indicated that the lowest trap was fed mainly by material from the underlying sediment. Low salinities, variability in molar ratios for major elements, higher than usual bacterial activities and detection of fatty acids characteristic of land plants during the June-August deployment show a relationship with the Odra flood of summer 1997.
