This paper largely investigates some of the main ideas of Ziya Gökalp by looking at his theoretical system as a successful attempt that used to offer solutions to the political problems of his time. He was an important Muslim intellectual and Turkish political theorist of the late 19th and early 20th century. Gökalp's thoughts concentrated on the mission of creating a nation for the emerging modern state of Turkey. The article also discusses how Gökalpian sociology was customized for the needs of Kemalist elites. It also aims at underlining the aspects of Gökalp’s nationalism theory, which have influenced Turkish political leaders as they have gradually redefined national identity in a way which has enabled them to tackle the challenges of their time.

Before of the First World War Triple Alliance and Entente rivalled for influence onto Turkey. For all Russia observed with unbelief of increase position German officers into Turkey army. Russian endurance 'overflow' in the fall of new chief of German military mission of general O. Liman von Sanders in November 1913. Russia asked for energetic action against German military mission in common with Paris and London. France and Britain did not want risk of war and promised diplomatic support only. London initiated diplomatic action for peaceful compromise and in common with others powers procured of constringency of German military mission out from Turkey in January 1914. This affair pointed dangerously of suspicion between powers, for all between Russia and Germany, in eve of the First World War.

The aim of this article is to briefly describe the new conceptions and issues of contemporary Turkish literature from the middle of the 1980s to the end of the century. A new social, political and cultural environment, which was created in this time in Turkey, was radically different to that of previous decades. The outcome has been a transition from nationalism to a more liberal understanding of the state and society by most Turkish intellectuals.

The mosques are very similar to art galleries due to the architectural and decorative properties. The calligraphy art was profound and applied on specific spots following specific rules. The calligraphy at the mosques of Sinan the Architect was written by the famous calligraphists of the time, Ahmet Karahisari, Hasan Celebi, Demircikulu Yusuf and Hasan Üsküdari. In this article, the calligraphy in the mosques of Istanbul Sehzade (1544-1548), Süleymaniye (1550-1557) and Edirne Selimiye (1569-1575) is researched to reveal the arrangement of calligraphy art in Sinan's mosques. The writings, almost resembling jewelry, in the mosques of Sinan complement the architecture. We wish that these writings will be preserved for the future generations.

Recent sudies have shown marked geographic variation associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in pediatric Burkitt's lymphomas and Hodgkin's disease. In the present study we investigated 30 cases of pediatric extranodal high grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) from Turkey with an abdominal localisation. To classify them histologically and to determine the role of EBV in these lymphomas, immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridisation (ISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used. Our series contained two histologic types: the Burkitt's or Burkitt's-like lymphomas (BL/BLL) and high grade NHL. They all were of the B cell type. The immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement revealed monoclonality in 87% of the BL/BLL cases, in contrast to the NHL cases, showing monoclonality in only 43% of the cases. EBV was found in tumor cells in a high frequency, independent of the histological subtype. EBV strains A and B were detected in 9 cases, with a preponderance of the B subtype (4/9 BL/BLL; 4/9 NHL). Our data suggest that high grade NHLs with abdominal localisation of Turkish children show the pattern of immunodeficient lymphomas to some extent.

Over the recent years the aspect of Ankara’s foreign policy towards its neighbours has become important in relations between the EU and Turkey. Notably, these relations are situated in an area defined by two axes: Turkey’s full membership in the EU, an option favoured by Turkey and the EU’s cooperation with Ankara (called “privileged partnership”), which is Brussels’ priority. The article aims to present the principal reasons from which these different objectives stem, making the entire picture of mutual relations between the parties somewhat paradoxical. It also attempts to present possible alternatives to this “vicious circle” in order to find a solution which might be profitable for both sides involved.

This paper empirically investigates the impact of international tourism receipts on the long-run economic growth of Turkey. For this purpose, tourism-led growth hypothesis is tested by using co-integration and Granger causality testing. The causal relationship between international tourism receipts and GDP is examined for the period 1980Q1-2004Q2. Johansen technique is used and vector error correction modelling (VECM) is incorporated into the Granger causality tests. The empirical results suggest that there are bidirectional causal relationships between the two variables in both the short and the long-run. In other words, it can be said that economic growth contributes to the development of tourism while tourism contributes to the economic growth.

This study aimed to explore the mediating role of university students’ resilience in the relationship between their life goals and hopelessness. The participants of the study consisted of a total of 455 students (252 females [55.4%], 203 males [44.6%]) from universities in six different cities in Turkey. The Scale of Setting Life Goals with Respect to Positive Psychotherapy (Eryılmaz, 2012), the Resilience Scale (Gürgan, 2006), and the Beck Hopelessness Scale (Beck et al., 1974) were used as a data collection tools. The data were analysed using correlation analysis and structural equation modelling methods. The correlation analysis revealed that hopelessness was negatively correlated with both life goals and resilience. Also, the mediation analysis put forth that resilience had a full mediating role in the relationship between life goals and hopelessness. Raising life goals and resilience of university students will help decrease their hopelessness.

Turkish efforts for the EU membership from 1963 to the 17th of Dec. 2004 were finally successful. The date of accession negotiations was set on the 3rd of October 2005. Concerning geography and culture Turkey is more Asian than European country. It is possible that it becomes full EU member in next 10 - 15 years. There will be advantages for both sides. Turkey will gain advantages from its membership - after the creation of customs union with the EU in 1996, Turkey will also acquire access to the four freedoms of common market of the EU. There is also a certain threat for Turkey concerning the free movement of labour - Turkey will have only limited access to this freedom. On the other side, the EU will acquire country with great growth dynamics and with wide market. Concerning risks, we have to mention relative political instability which is to be solved before the accession to the EU.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between metacognition and grit. Participants were 352 university students who were enrolled in Sakarya University, in Turkey. In this study, the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory and the Grit Scale were used. The relationship between metacognition and grit were examined using correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. In correlation analysis, grit was found positively related to metacognition. According to results the two-dimensions of grit (consistency of interest and perseverance of effort) predicted metacognition positively. Results were discussed in the light of literature.

In this contribution, based on a qualitative research conducted in 2008 – 2009 in Ankara and Antalya (Turkey), return migration from Germany to Turkey is analysed. Different dynamics are elaborated. A central return motive is the worsening situation on the German labour market and considerations concerning a possible improvement of social status in the return context. Main question is, in how far family migration networks are explanatory for a discussion of differences in return and circular migration patterns? Among others a comparison was made concerning 1) motives, values, emotional affiliations (longing for a home) and 2) circumstances resulting in circular migration strategies or reasons for a permanent settlement in the return context, i.e. educational and job opportunities and also marriage. Gender and generational differences were considered. The decision to return or to engage in circular migration strongly depends on the place of residence of the family members and material and immaterial supports provided by the family. Transnational family- and migration networks, the interconnection of different migrant generations, the exchange of different migration experiences and the resulting transfer of economic, social, cultural and symbolic capital has to be mentioned as important. In addition the legal embeddedness in Germany (residence permits, citizenship, welfare benefits, etc.) as well as better chances on the Turkish labour market and better educational opportunities (school/university) in Turkey turned out to be decisive.

Mark of Vysoká chamberlain to King Louis II was sent on a mission to the Ottoman Empire in 1517. His aim was to meet Prince Süleyman, son of Sultan Selim, and if possible also meet the imprisoned Hungarian envoy Barnabas Béley. Mark and his group achieved the aim of the Meir mission in a short time – after 19 days of travel. He kept a detailed record of his stay in the city of Edirne and return journey, but only three fragments survive today. The study presents an analysis of the historical context of the mission and an edition of the surviving fragments of Mark’s record of the journey.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between math anxiety, math attitudes, and self-efficacy. Participants were 372 university students who were enrolled in Sakarya University, in Turkey. In this study, the Revised Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale, the Mathematics Attitudes Scale, and the Self-efficacy Scale were used. Using correlation analysis, math anxiety was found negatively related to positive attitudes and self-efficacy and positively to negative attitudes. On the other hand, positive attitudes were found positively associated with self-efficacy and negatively with negative attitudes. According to the path analysis results, positive attitudes were predicted positively and negative attitudes predicted negatively by self-efficacy. Also, self-efficacy and positive attitudes predicted math anxiety in a negative way and negative attitudes predicted math anxiety in a positive way. Results were discussed in the light of literature.

The present study reports the C-band patterns of chromosomes of Myocastor coypus from Turkey. The karyotype of M. coypus is comprised of (2n) 42 chromosomes, the number of chromosomal arms (FN) was 83 and the number of autosomal arms (FNa) was 80. The X chromosome was a medium-sized metacentric and the Y chromosome was acrocentric and the smallest in the set. Two metacentric chromosomes have secondary constrictions. Most autosomes in this species were centromeric C-positive and some autosomes had telomeric C-bands. The X chromosome has centromeric heterochromatin, while the Y chromosome appeared to be entirely heterochromatic.

This paper investigates transnationalism among the Turks as a multifaceted phenomenon that has been engendered by the interconnectivity in the modern world, mass education and the victorious rise of telecommunication technologies, cyberspace media as well as the global transportation systems. With loosening of boundaries between the countries from Germany and the United States as far as Central Asia, the Turks have entered into numerous transnational networks as the important actors. My focus here is on the transnational religious identity of Islam among the Turks, mainly in Germany and Central Asia, that manifests itself through both non-governmental movements and networks (apolitical as well as political, both accommodationist and extremist), and state-based organizations. The identity, that arises out of such a process can be influenced by ethnolinguistic transnationalism, nationalistic transnationalism or political aspirations, too.

In Turkey, the effectiveness of the agricultural support policies is a constantly discussed matter. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the effects of the 'MPS' and 'DPS' on the welfare of the producer and the consumer, and on the net society losses and gains. In the study, 'wheat' has been taken into account, which is generally accepted as the key product. In line with the purpose of the study, Partial Equilibrium Model (PEM) has been used when analyzing the data. In accordance with the results of the study, it has been established that 'DPS' is the preferred alternative as far as net social revenues are concerned, and 'MPS' is the preferred alternative as far as reducing the budget burden is concerned.

The reality shock is experienced mostly by novice teachers in transitioning to profession when they are confronted with a gap between what they learned during their education and the reality awaiting them within the early years of their career. Similarly, senior students in teaching programs may have occupational concerns proceeding from not having encountered the profession itself yet. Here, we elaborate on the relationship between reality shock expectation and occupational concerns of pre-service teachers. A total of 464 Turkish pre-service teachers participated. We discovered experiencing reality shock expectation prior to professional life to be significantly predicted by appointment, students/communication, and social/economic concerns. Moreover, there was a significant interaction between study major and reality shock expectation of the participants. Overall, we discuss the probable factors triggering reality shock expectation and occupational concerns, and the implications for future research in accordance with a similar literature.

The main aim of this article is to show how the Cyprus dispute affected the preparations and achievements of the Republic of Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, and to present its implications with respect to relations between Turkey and the European Union. The author discusses the essence of the Cyprus dispute, namely the occupation of the northern part of the island by Turkish armed forces. Further, he describes the influence of Cyprus’s integration with the EU on the EU-Turkey rela¬tions in the pre-Presidency period. The main part of the article focuses on the Cypriot Presidency, during which Cyprus did not entangle the other Member States in the problems of the divided island, but acted in the best interest of the entire EU. The reaction of the Turkish government, which boycotted the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus, is also characterized.
