Both in Poland and in Europe civilian costume studies has managed to gain undeniable recognition in the academic circles connected with the humanities. One result of that, apart from considerable development of the research and an increasing number of specialist publications, also in Poland, is recognizing costume studies as an auxiliary science of history. It is generally acknowledged that it concerns an important element of man-created civilization: material culture. It is very different in Poland, however, as regards military costume studies, especially in relation to research on uniform studies, which is rare and developing slowly. As a result, it is a low-prestige activity, and in consequence, apart from rare cases, beyond the interests of costume studies experts in civilian fashion or historians exploring military history. In the case of military costume studies, the major and most frequently used Polish terms are “barwa”, “mundur” and “uniform” and their derivatives. That is why the author of this article, using major Polish dictionaries and encyclopedias, decided to investigate how their meaning developed and changed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and also what their origin is, i.e. which languages they have been borrowed from.

The paper presents a proposal of a new methodology that evaluates multicast routing algorithms in packet-switched networks with an application of fuzzy sets. Proposed multicriteria mechanism evaluate representative multicast routing algorithms: KPP, CSPT and MLRA (Multicast Routing Algorithm with Lagrange Relaxation) that minimize cost of paths between source and each destination node using Lagrange relaxation, and finally, minimize the total cost of multicast tree. A wide range of simulation research carried out by the authors, confirmed both the accuracy of new methodology and the effectiveness of the MLRA algorithm proposed by authors in earlier works.

W artykule zaprezentowano dwa metodologicznie zaawansowane projekty badania przedsiębiorczości – Globalny Monitor Przedsiębiorczości (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, GEM) oraz Panelowe Badania Dynamiki Przedsiębiorczości (Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics, PSED).

The paper presents two methodologically advanced projects in the field of entrepreneurship – Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED). Both of them were created as an answer to the need for obtaining high-quality empirical material that could be the base for international comparisons and longitudinal analyses. Both projects also have an advantage over official statistics, namely full comparability and possibility of in-depth insight into motives, attitudes, behaviors and aspirations of entrepreneurs. In the paper a comparison of methodologies of projects is presented. I also show exemplary possibilities of creating new knowledge based on empirical data gathered in the projects and assess how they answer the identified research needs. Finally, the strengths and future perspectives of the projects are discussed.

The article aims at analysing figures of thinking about modern weddings and wedding photography in Poland. It draws on ethnographic material collected in the course of research conducted by the Seweryn Udziela Ethnographic Museum in Cracow (research project Wesela 21). The author describes main assumptions behind the project, research methodology, and provides a brief description of the analysed materials, applied method and theoretical perspective. She reconstructs notions about the wedding photography market, which are revealed in the interviews with wedding photographers and filmmakers, and modes of creating wedding representations. The author also discusses different typologies of weddings mentioned during the interviews. The division into “country” and “urban” weddings, as the author suggests, calls for critical analysis. It seems to mark social and cultural distinctions. The attributes “country” and “urban” are rather aesthetic categories than those which describe a particular space conceived in geographical terms.

The specificity of the 21st century filled with economic and social problems, acts of terror as well as armed conflicts downrightly necessitates undertaking the research in the field of security sciences. However, each time defining a subject of scientific research is of the utmost importance in order to systemize research works and mainly concretize interests. Such the aim was chosen by the author of the current article who, while presenting the orientations of individual scientific theoreticians and researchers dealing with security issues, answers the subject matter question: What does constitute the subject of the research in security sciences? The author’s inquiries were preceded by the explanation of the types of security and its scope within individual cases, which includes the essence of national and international security. In the further part of the article the author’s attention was focused on the sphere of methodology in security sciences. The author notices that the subject of research in the security science is of multidimensional character hence explanation, description, analyzing, assessing and forecasting the consequences of ongoing processes and events in the security sphere, together with initiation of activities which serve for ensuring security, require applying the knowledge from various scientific disciplines, domains and fields. In the following part of the article the attempt to define the subject of research in security sciences and drawing the conclusions within that field was undertaken. The author cites the orientations by A. Dawidczyk and T. Jemiolo according to whom the subject of research in security sciences is defined as the threat coming from human surroundings and all the activities aiming at ensuring and maintaining security for a man. The article is summarized by the conclusions where it was determined that in security sciences, the security, its components, ratio, level and relations with respect to the subject of research are studied.

The author proposes a method of studying the influence of agglomerations on the development of tourism. The influence of agglomerations on the development of tourism is illustrated by the case of the Lviv region and the use of correlation analysis. In addition, official statistics about the main indicator of the tourism industry by region and city are subjected to centrographic analysis. The coincidence of weight centers confirms the exceptional influence of the Lviv agglomeration on the development of tourism in the region, which is illustrated with a cartographic visualization.

The information system in a local government unit should ensure an adequate flow of information to ensure the efficient and effective management of the unit. All organisations should take care of the quality and quantity of available information. This objective can be achieved by the continuous diagnosis and assessment of the functioning information system to draw meaningful conclusions, to identify actions for its improvement in order to make the system an effective support for managerial processes and adequate tool to the needs of the activity of a local government unit. In the article the authors proposed the research methodology of the analysis of the information system in a local government unit. The proposed research methodology is based on questionnaire surveys, which allows a thorough diagnosis of the information system in local government units to identify the deficit in the tools applied in these units and to identify actions to improve the system.

In this concluding paper to the special issue (SI) we seek to achieve three main goals. First, based on the papers it included in the SI, other recent publications as well as our own ideas, we point to the future directions of research into language learning strategies. Second, we comment upon the methodological issues that such research inevitably has to face, stressing in particular the need to combine a macro-and micro-perspective. Third, we emphasize the pedagogical orientation of such empirical investigations and make a plea for intensive efforts on the part of specialists to find ways in which the findings of LLS research can in fact inform classroom pedagogy.

The article presents an analysis of research methodology in special needs education as presented by Aleksander Hulek in 1983 in relation to the current research. The article contains Professor Hulek’s scientific achievements, as well as the theory of common and specific factors in revalidation. Methodological assumptions, as presented by Aleksander Hulek were applied in research conducted to verify the theory as specified above. Professor Hulek specified four stages of scientific research development in the field of special needs education, however only the last of them, in his opinion, met the conditions of research objectivity. He suggested a model of comparative studies, taking into consideration both the control group and a representative selection of subjects as well as using qualitative measurement. Now, after thirty years, the specified stages should be understood as approaches to research and each of them has been developed and is still applied. The suggested model is still used, although it has some limitations.

The purpose of this article is to show how action research is used as a research method in foreign language didactics. Six articles have been chosen from refereed journals and analyzed in respect to such categories as research questions and problems, research aims, the relationship between research participants and researcher, research procedures, data collection methods, results and research quality. This initial analysis reveals that action research studies (1) do not easily fall into one distinct research paradigm, (2) can be both quantitative and qualitative, or mixed, (3) collaboration of research participants is often very limited, and (4) there are problems with quality criteria.

The article presents a presumption that contemporary rural areas are witnesses not only to intense transformations of the inhabitants’ living conditions but also very rapid changes to the language spoken by the local communities where the traditionally defined dialects are less and less frequently the major means of communication.1) The presented research proposal highlights the need for taking into account several premises: collecting in the field lexical material mainly by focusing attention on a specific subject area;2) taking into account various social and linguistic parameters at the stage of collecting the material; for the research, select informants who represent various generations as indicated by the informants’ years of birth; for the purpose of clarity, five generation intervals have been identified;3) the material, subjected to computer processing, should be accompanied by particulars including a few basic parameters that allow to characterise each element in detail.

Oil lamps as archaeological finds and in museum collections provide a wealth of information. Various types of studies may be applied to investigate their meaning in ancient times. When several methods are used simultaneously, the objects may be interpreted according to distinct aspects, enabling us to study this group of ceramic objects from a multidisciplinary, comprehensive perspective. Such aspects are described in this paper, supplemented by a case study concerning oil lamps from the Agora in Nea Paphos, Cyprus.

In this article I try to recognise a possible role of play in contemporary cultural anthropological research. Although the relationships between this fi eld of study and play are by no means new, what is most usually taken into account, is the formative function of play in culture, and this is often analysed only in relation to adults. Here, however, I focus on a different possible perspective: on including a playful element into the very research process. Nowadays, this becomes an important factor, pertaining to the attempts of cultural anthropologists to include children as subjects into the main course of study, as well as to recognise their role as social actors, who also build the society. Theoretical thoughts on research methodology were illustrated with a short example taken from my own and my research team’s study with children belonging to families with a history of infertility.

This paper provides a discussion on various aspects and features of the concept of the social sciences of sport. The concept originated recently and was formulated in 2007 during the preparations for the establishment of the International Society for the Social Sciences of Sport. The Society, however, was not formed until the beginning of 2009. Among other things, the concept includes such academic disciplines and fields as sport sociology, sport philosophy, sport psychology, sport pedagogy, the history of physical fitness, sport and Olympism, sport politics and the international conditions of sport, sport economics, sport organizations and management, the social and cultural foundations of tourism and recreation, the social relations regarding training and sport tactics, as well as the humanistic theory of martial arts. The author presents a growth in interest of different social aspects and issues of sport at the beginning of the twentieth century. He indicates the significant development of sport during the second half of the last century, especially towards its end and at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The social sciences of sport was also underlined as the reason for the creation of a new, dynamically developing cognitive paradigm. According to the Author, it is mainly connected with the institutional and functional, organizational and methodological conditions of the social science of sport which specifically complemented the educational and research standards for the academic community around the globe. The Author emphasizes the social sciences of sport’s distinctive and autonomous part in sport science due to its specific and detailed merit-related issues and methodological foundations. He also stresses that not only does natural science (particularly biological science) play an important role in sport science, but also that the social science of sport has a vital and fundamental value in it. In his opinion, natural (biological) science in relation to sport refers mainly to one person’s organism, whereas social science refers, for the most part, to the axiological, cultural, symbolical, esthetic, ethical perception of physical exertion. Moreover, research conducted in this field encompasses the professional, pragmatic, utilitarian, cathartic, escapist, ludic, hedonistic, epistemological and recreational aspects of differently perceived professional sports or sport for all. The Author points out that the amount of available courses - lectures, classes, seminars - in the field of social sciences themselves, as well as in the social science of sport, is being gradually reduced, which undoubtedly lowers not only the knowledge, but also the perception, interpretation, explanation and comprehension of sport in the context of the humanistic approach. Furthermore, he indicates this trend’s influential role in the development of common-sense thinking, which makes opinion-forming and valuable comments on the subject of sport undergo cognitive deformations. He points out its negative influence on the listeners, audience and fans’ consciousness, opinion and attitude, as well as on the interpretative context of the observed events - not only ones associated with sport, but also those happening beyond it, for instance in social, family, peer, professional, political and religious life.

The aim of this study was to verify the reliability and user-friendliness of some of the most popular ways of collecting information from respondents. The article provides a synthetic review of the use of various research methods and techniques, which is supplemented by results of the author’s own survey of 280 people who visited guest farms in rural areas of Mazowieckie province in 2019. The respondents found online and paper-based surveys the most user-friendly method while they rated telephone interviews as the least user-friendly. Asked to assess the reliability of data collection techniques, the respondents considered covert observation and mystery shopping to be the most reliable, while the telephone interview was regarded as the least trustworthy. The assessment of the user-friendliness and reliability of different data collection methods and techniques varied by gender, age and the level of education. It can be expected that insights from the study can help to improve the methodology of rural tourism research.

Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, research methodology in the field of language learning and teaching has taken a narrative turn and, consequently, a growing number of empirical studies have employed narrative inquiry methods to investigate different facets of second language acquisition. Narrative inquiry in language teaching and learning research, a volume authored by Gary Barkhuizen, Phil Benson and Alice Chik, aims to provide a concise and practical introduction to different approaches to designing, implementing, analysing and reporting oral, written and multimodal narrative data in studies on second language learners and teachers. In this review I discuss the general relevance of narrative studies in the field and, after a brief summary of the six chapters, I offer a critical analysis of the book’s content.
