My response engages with Matthew Rampley’s quest for fertile ways to incorporate east-central European art history within a shared larger framework: why should, and how could, modern art from east-central Europe have pertinence for audiences elsewhere? While I agree with Rampley that the materiality of center/ periphery-relations cannot be simply thought away by the force of mental magic, I insist that (art historical) scholarship need not reproduce unjust geopolitical givens. Indeed, a beauty of our profession is the pursuit and production of potentially transformative knowledge. In this conviction, I (re-)directed Rampley’s quest towards intellectual agendas that contributed to the renewal of art historical scholarship a couple of decades ago: ‘historyfrom- below’, post-structuralist and post-colonial critique, the social and spatial turns, the concepts of multiple modernities and alternative geographies of Modernism and, perhaps most importantly, feminist epistemology and art history. Exposing the false universalism of earlier approaches, these narrative projects put forth more inclusionist demands and followed up the logical consequences of opening up (art) history for marginal or non-European cultures. A further aspect of a shared alternative framework appears to be a reduced emphasis on aesthetic-only concepts or stylistic labels as primary analytic concerns. I also estimate that both the producers and the most eager audience of these more inclusive narratives will be found in a quickly growing intellectual community of ‘minor transnationalists’ and proponents of ‘transmodernity’ or a transperipheral conversation.

Author suggests that we should not treat our own life too seriously. Treating seriously can be analyzed, firstly, as treating as something important. But we should not think about ourselves as more important than other persons. The second analysis suggests life without sense of humor. But, irony and laugh is the only way to cope with tragic events. That is why the attitude of resignation and accepting one own weakness is, against moral ideals, acceptable.

This article briefly discusses the relationship between life and death. Understanding of this relationship has changed over the centuries, but this article focuses primarily on contemporary issues. The analysis makes reference to the texts of Max Scheler and Arthur Schopenhauer, as well as to the poetry of Rilke. This indicates that a human being should accept the necessity of death. Avoiding the truth, or attempting to take control over death – which is sometimes suggested by contemporary culture and technology – can be devastating for life

The problem of product life as an important factor of toys safe use is considered. Main sources of hazards and their adverse effect to children health are characterized. The results of unwanted events associated with improper toy design and with its quality of manufacture as well as with use of inappropriate materials for toys production are discussed. Necessity of using the laboratory testing methods based on ageing process to predict changes in toys parameters during their use are pointed out. Features and criteria for assessment of toys life in the light of formal and legal requirements are specified. Considering experience of other scientists, presented in scientific publications as well as the results of the author studies, the innovative method for assessment of life of toys made of polymers is suggested.

The term used in the title has not so far been the subject of a more extensive linguistic reflection. The author of the paper aims at providing a disciplined description of lexical units containing the segment żyć with respect to their structure and meaning. The method of analysis is based on putting forward hypotheses in the form of analytical implications and subjecting them to falsification by bringing them down to contradiction. The content of the paper focuses on issues relating to reconstruction of the form of lexical units (on the basis of segment and supra-segment signals) and reconstruction of the hierarchy of meaningful components. In close relationship with the content of the analysed terms, also the notions wiedzieć ('to know') and robić ('to do/make') are discussed. The author tries to prove that those components belong to the semantic structure of the examined phrase; he also proposes a preliminary explication of meanings in the terms of natural semantic meta-language.

Feature of oeuvre of Marina Tsvetaeva – the predominance of the motive of death. Henry Gorchakov discovers this topic in sixty percent of the poet’s works of M.Tsvetaeva. Naturally, reflections on death are accompanied by reflections on life. The article analyzes the peculiarities of development of Tsvetaeva’s work of another constant motive – the motive of life, the concept of which is found out in a complex metaphysical context of thinking. Particular attention is paid to the diversity of approaches to understanding life and their changes. At the same time, the poet does not develop his own philosophy of life, focusing on the world of experiences, on the one hand, or on a holistic and volatile reality, on the other.

The conception of time, presented by St. Augustine, unites within itself the physical-philosophical views of Aristotle, and its own psychological view concerning the lived experience of the flow of sensory impressions from the past towards the future. H. Majkrzak (1999) underlines, in Augustine, the existential moment of time. The time of a human life is limited: it is situated within borders stretching from the day of birth to the day of death. This faithful and precise representation of the Augustinian conception of time, nevertheless brings the reader up against a problem: What value does it have today?

The article discusses extension and intension of the advertisement concept. The core idea, originality, likeability (attractiveness), target population orientation, motivation (encouragement) are viewed as the main components of the contemporary advertising. For that 1250 slogans were analyzed to reveal the frequent lexical items (with regard to parts of speech). The fact that the most frequent name is LIFE is interpreted in view of streamline of publicity manipulation and ideology of advertising.

Biological knowledge is expanding rapidly, delving deep into nature’s mechanisms. However, the essence of life as a molecular process still remains unclear. Organized and independently operating biological systems are commonly thought to be living. Unfortunately, these characteristics are too general and altogether insufficient to accurately delimit the boundaries of life. The problem of the relation of many primitive biological entities to the living world is still open. The properties of self-dependent biological systems clearly derive from their highly organized automatic nature. The comparative analysis of genomes of primitive biological organisms seems to be the most promising approach, which may eventually lead to the understanding of life at the molecular level and its definition. The erythrocyte appears to be of particular interest as a model of a living system that is at a boundary. Its biological origin, automatically controlled metabolism, and programmed death sharply defined in time qualify it as the living structure, even though it is completely deprived of a genetic apparatus. However, its membership among living systems seems to be well-founded. Protein aggregation is one of the common characteristics of aging. It is a consequence of abnormalities of protein structure induced by destructive actions but also by abnormalities of synthesis. Aggregation of membrane proteins probably affects the activity of certain enzymes or transport proteins, which are important as energy providers for aging erythrocytes. After the erythrocyte has passed through the vascular system a given number of times, it is not able to undergo a certain set of indispensable metabolic rearrangements. A living thing is then a form of animated nature which has the features of independence as a result of automation and possesses its own compatible with nature program of action which is time-limited beforehand.

Passing, departing of man became an awkward subject in the contemporary civilization (avoiding problems of old age and death, the cult of the body). However, the problem of solitude affect's man at every time of his or her life. Therefore, there is a need to seek solutions in the interdisciplinary dimension conducive to the elimination of loneliness of older people (or at least to contribute to their reduction) and relieve the consequences. Active participation of older people in the life of family and society is very important. People supporting the elderly (physicians, nurses, social workers, volunteers) should promote the concept of old age being valuable, full of possibilities, often hidden developmental reserves.

With the swift development of technology, the distance among people’s hearts surprisingly becomes further and further. Residents living in the congested cities feel more lonely than those who inhabit countryside. The mass media makes them consider everything at hand stereotyped. They parrot their designated work again and again, without passion or enthusiasm. Hence facing these social predicaments and interior struggle, Robert M. Pirsig embarks on a trip to cross America by motorcycle, in order to gain spiritual epiphany and freedom. Therefore, he finds quality is the panacea that may solve the present problems. Quality has a long history, which is closely analogous to Plato’s goodness. Quality is one, just as the supreme spirit in the Buddhist Upanishad whose universe and ego are identical. However, modern technology lacks of oneness, so that each time touching it, people only feel cruel and ugly since both the creator and the owner do not have the sense of identity for their innovative or possessive things. The injection of quality into technology may break through the difficulties resulting from the traditional method of dichotomy for the reason that quality spurs technology to melt nature and human’s soul, creating something that exceeds the two. This thesis aims to probe the meaning of quality and the account of modern crisis caused by the absence of quality. The last part points out how to reconcile the conflict between human’s value and technological needs, so as to achieve the ultimate goal that enhances people’s happiness.

The term used in the title has, so far, not been the subject of a more extensive linguistic reflection. The author of the paper aims at providing a description of lexical units implying the argument 'unborn being (child)' with respect to their structure and meaning. The method of analysis is based on proposing hypotheses in the form of analytical implications and subjecting them to falsification by bringing them down to contradiction. The content of the paper focuses on issues relating to the reconstruction of the form of lexical units (verbs). In a close reference to the content of the analysed terms, the discussion considers also the following notions: 'żyć', 'wiedzieć', 'robić' and many others. The author tries to prove that those components belong to the semantic structure of the examined phrases with the term child (unborn).

John Lizza says that to define death well, we must go beyond biological considerations. Death is the absence of life in an entity that was once alive. Biology is the study of life. Therefore, the definition of death should not involve non-biological concerns.

This article attempts to assess the moral progress of biomedicine. At the beginning of the analysis the man is presented in the context of the auto teleological. In the second part of the article are shown tasks and role of biotechnology in relation to human needs. Analyzing the achievements of technology the author shows the moral limits of their application. It is emphasized that technology as a tool used by everyone on a daily basis can lead to happiness or cause misfortune. The moral evaluation of the progress refers to many conclusions of John Paul II, inter alia, in his encyclical Evangelium vitae, Redemptor hominis and Veritatis splendor, taking into account its various speeches at various symposiums, as well as quoting the text of the Catechism of the Church Catholic.

The author presents an integral vision of a human being as the foundation for understanding vocation and respect for life. It emphasizes the truths: man as a body and spirit being; the dignity and worth of every person created in the image and likeness of God; the vocation to love, i.e. the ability to give oneself as a gift. As a source for reflection, it is the light of God’s truth found in the Holy Scriptures and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The author shows the socio-cultural problems related to the lack of respect for human values that are taking place today. It presents the necessity of catechesis in social life, which is to respond with faith to human existence. It presents the problems posed by the world and the response of catechetical content to particular threats.

During his pontificate, Pope John Paul II strongly supported the idea of “civilization of love”. To the Polish Pope, the existence of ‘the civilization of love’ was the foundation of a humane world in the context of a civilization depreciating the value of the human being. This article addresses the concept of “the civilization of love”, with a special focus drawn to the aims, principles and fundamental assumptions of “the civilization of love.”
