The description of contemporary ranking methods specially developed for universities and scientific institutions are presented on the base of strictly defined quantitative indicators. The data of this indicators are used for management of universities and scientific institutions, but very rarely in Poland. At the end the list of remedies is proposed to achieve the better position of national scientific institutions and universities.
