This article presents the concept of 'civil labor' as developed by the well–known German sociologist Urlich Beck. The objective behind civil labor is to create an alternative to paid employment in the form of various types of ventures that foster continued activity outside the labor market without falling into the pitfall of unemployment. Beck strove to create the idea of a post–employment society in which an individual's status is not defined on the basis of paid work being performed, but on the basis of the individual's own input into the life of the local community. Such individual activity within the local community provides the opportunity to evade the stigma of unemployment. It makes possible full participation in social life by a person momentarily deprived of paid employment.
