DETERMINERS AND ADJECTIVES IN A HIERARCHICAL STRUCTURE OF THE NOUN PHRASE
This paper investigates the relationships between determiners and adjectives from the perspective of X-bar syntax. The point of departure for the study is the approach to determiners analysed as dependents in the noun phrase put forward by K. Wegrzynek and I. Bobrowski. The multi-layered structure of the noun phrase proposed by K. Wegrzynek and I. Bobrowski is compared with the linear approach of M. Gebka-Wolak. Determiners are analyzed here as a subclass of adjectives, and a distinction between determiner and determiner-like adjectives is made. Determiner adjectives (demonstratives, universal and indefinite determiners) cannot be used predicatively and cannot be co-ordinated. Determiner-like adjectives (possessives and adjectives like 'caly', 'ostatni') are distinguished on the basis of their distributional properties, which are different from the distributional properties of non-determiner adjectives, especially on the basis of their ability to occur before a numeral as well in-between determiner adjectives.
