During the 19th century there was neighter Polish or German university in Prussian Poland. Polish youth from Poznan, Pomerania, Warmia and Mazuria gained their education at the German universities, mostly in Wroclaw, Berlin but in the other academic centers as well. Initially, the number of Polish students in the Bavarian Würzburg was rather minor, but it increased after 1873, in the Kulturkampf period, when seminaries in Gniezno, Poznan and Chelmno archdioceses were closed. Then the Polish candidates for priesthood started coming in great numbers. Medicine was also very popular. In the year 1876 the Scientific Association of the Polish Academics 'Polonia' was founded. In 1884 the association organized a formal celebration of the November Uprising anniversary which resulted in the Prussian intervention and the Bavarian authorities put the association under surveillance. After the period of Kulturkampf had finished the number of Polish students in Wuerzburg diminished and the student association withered away.
