This paper proposes a novel custom power device (CPD), called a Universal Power Quality Conditioner (UnPQC), which enhanced the quality of power in a distribution system. UnPQC consists of shunt and series compensators without a common DC link. The series compensator of the presented system, also known as Transformerless Dynamic Voltage Restorer (TDVR), eliminates power quality problems related to voltage without utilizing any injecting transformer. The shunt compensator of the proposed system consists of an improved DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator) topology, which mitigates the current harmonics originating from the nonlinear loads with a reduced DC link voltage. UnPQC is more suitable for applications where weight and size of the CPDs are critical factors. A simulation was carried out to verify and validate the performance of the UnPQC and the results demonstrate superior performance in minimizing voltage and current related power quality problems.

This paper presents a Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) that uses a traditional Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) to make source current in phase and sinusoidal shape w.r.t source voltage, so that unity power factor is achieved at source side. In addition to this, a new concept of single phase synchronous d-q reference frame theory is used for generation of reference signals in a three phase distribution system for compensation of voltage unbalances at the load side. Further, this paper uses a traditional hysteresis controller for generation of switching signals for the Voltage Source Converter (VSC). Moreover, switching of DSTATCOM between Current Controlled Mode (CCM) and Voltage Controlled Mode (VCM) is carried out so that only single DSTATCOM serves the problem for current and voltage related Power Quality problems. Simulations are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink environment to validate the proposed scheme and results indicate that the unity power factor is achieved during CCM mode and voltages in all the three phases at PCC are maintained at 1 p.u. during VCM mode.

This paper presents a Distribution Static Compensator based on Four Leg Voltage Source Inverter (4-leg VSI DSTATCOM) with controlling by Synchronous Reference Frame theory (SRF) in the dq0 frame with Enhanced Phase Locked Loop based on Self-Tuning Filter (EPLL-STF) used for compensating four-wire distribution systems.The proposed 4-leg VSI DSTATCOM is used for load balancing, source harmonics filtering, reactive power compensation and power factor correction, and source neutral wire current compensation at the point of common coupling (PCC) in the four-wire distribution network under unbalanced linear loads and nonlinear load variation with various source and PCC voltages conditions. The new SRF theory with EPLL based on STF is used for harmonics current extraction and good estimation of PCC voltages without harmonics under unbalanced PCC voltages and loads. Three dimensional space vector modulation (3D SVM) is used to generate the gate switching pulses for the 4-leg VSI and to circumvent the problems of the switching frequency variant, and for DC bus voltage capacitor and compensating 4-leg VSI DSTATCOM currents we are going to use the PI controller (Proportional-Integral). The effectiveness of the proposed 4-leg DSTATCOM under unbalanced PCC voltages and loads with various control strategies are demonstrated through simulation using sim-power-system and S-Function integrated in Matlab simulink.

In this paper, a new method for improving reliability level of distribution systems is presented by employing optimal placement of DSTATCOM. The binary version of the Gravitational Search algorithm (BGSA) is used to solve the DSTATCOM optimal placement problem. The simulation results show that the proposed method is efficient and feasible for improving the system reliability level by reducing load outages and momentary interruptions.

Przedstawiono nową metodę poprawy niezawodności system dystrybucji energii dzięki optymalizacji DSTATCOM. Optymalne położenie DSTATCOM było określane na podstawie algorytmu BGSA. Uzyskano [poprawę dzięki dedukcji przerw w obciążeniu i chwilowych zaników.

In this study, voltage dip analysis of the wind power plant that is connected to 6 MW Double Feed Induction Generator (DFIG) was performed. During the operation of Multi-machine wind farm that is connected to network adaptation between 10 MVAr STATCOM and system was provided. Purpose of this adaptation, 3-phase fault analysis is to be able and the elimination of problems that may occur with induction motor runstop.

This paper proposes a novel passivity-based control scheme for the cascaded H-bridge (CHB) DSTATCOM. The mathematical model of the CHB-DSTATCOM is devised by partitioning the CHB-DSTATCOM into n-block subsystems, and the control algorithm is devised using the adaptive passivity controller. The power balancing mechanism and the stable control region are analyzed using the phasorial diagram representation. The Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) is used for digital simulation, and the Transient Analysis of Control System (TACS) and the MODELS language of the EMTP are utilized for control algorithm implementation. The simulation results of the CHB-DSTATCOM under abrupt dclink voltage variations are provided with comparative evaluations. The devised control scheme of the CHB-DSTATCOM is validated by the simulation and experimental results from the prototype system.

Content available remote Effect of DC Capacitor Size on D-STATCOM Voltage Regulation Performance Evaluation

This paper describes the modelling and simulation of distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM) focused with effect of DC capacitor size and voltage regulation. Different capacitor values have been investigated to reduce the load ripple voltage during the charging and discharging of the capacitor. The optimum capacitor valuse has been determined to obtained the lowest ripple voltage within the rage of 8%. Capacitive and inductive mode of D-STATCOM operation have been also investigated and obtained results proved that the capability of the D-STATCOM in regulating the system voltage is near to the rated value of 1.0 p.u.

W artykule przedstawiono sposób budowy modelu i symulacje kompensatora pasywnego D-STATCOM, ze naciskiem na analizę wpływu pojemności kondensatorów oraz regulacji napięcia na jego działanie. Badania wykonano dla różnych pojemności i wyznaczono optymalną, zapewniającą najmniejsze wahania napięcia (w zakresie 8%). Analizie poddano działanie kompensatora przy charakterze pojemnościowym i indukcyjnym.

The sensitive industrial loads and critical commercial operations suffer from harmonics problems which can cost significant loss per incident based on process down-time, loss production, idle work forces and other factors. To overcome such problems, utility companies have made efforts to improve the quality and reliability of their electric power by introducing distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM). However, up to now, many research are going on D-STATCOM control scheme, suitable pulse and transformer design, dc capacitance effect and involvement with many power quality problems. This paper deals with the modelling and simulations of D-STATCOM model focus with the pulse selection, transformer design configuration and test distribution system. The issue of harmonics in the D-STATCOM is addressed by considering a 24-pulse so as to eliminate the generated harmonics. The harmonics eliminating performance of the D-STATCOM in 12-pulse, 24-pulse and 48-pulse are also investigated.

W artykule opisano budowę modelu i symulacje kompensatora statycznego D-STATCOM. Przedstawiono zagadnienie liczby pulsów, konfiguracji transformatora oraz przeprowadzono testy systemu energetycznego. Analizie poddano zagadnienie eliminacji wyższych harmonicznych w układach 12-, 24- oraz 48-pulsowym.

Content available remote Power balancing control strategies for the cascaded H-bridge multilevel DSTATCOM

This paper proposes a novel power balancing control scheme for the cascaded H-bridge (CHB) DSTATCOM. The principle of the carrier phase-shifted pulse-width modulation (CPS-PWM) and the mathematical model of the CHB-DSTATCOM are presented. The power balancing mechanism and the stable control region are analyzed using the phasorial diagram representation. The current loop controller is designed by using root locus approach, and the dc-link voltage balancing controller is synthesized based on the devised power balancing mechanism. The simulation results obtained from the alternative transient program (ATP) are presented and evaluated. The validity and effectiveness of the control scheme is confirmed by the simulation and experimental results.

Zapropnowano nową metodę równoważenia mocy w kaskadowym H-mostkowym SSTATCOM. Zaprezentowano zasadę modulacji przesunięcia fazowego i szerokości impulsu CPS-PWM i model matematyczny CHB-DSTATCOM. Równoważenie mocy i analiza stabilnego sterowania zostały przeprowadzone przy użyciu diagramu fazowego. Kontroler pętli prądowej został zaprojektowany przy użyciu obwiedni pierwiastkowej a kontroler napięcia dc-link jest syntetyzowany na podstawie balansu mocy. Przedstawiono symulowane rezultaty. Symulacje i eksperymenty potwierdziły skuteczność metody.
